Marvel Alternate Realities Omnibus Mapping: Malibu Ultraverse Omnibuses

Malibu’s Ultraverse was an independent shared universe that was acquired and then absorbed by Marvel (who was primarily in the market for Malibu’s state-of-the-art coloring process, not their intellectual property).

By all accounts, all Malibu IP remains in long term legal limbo, with Marvel employees staying mum on if we ever could see it reprinted or licensed. However, with books like ROM, Micronauts, and Godzilla recently hitting omnibus, nothing seems impossible!

This is by no means a comprehensive mapping of the Malibu Ultraverse – but, it does include the biggest, longest-running titles with omnibus-lengthed runs. If you see anything I’ve missed, please comment!

Ultraverse: Mantra (1993 – 1995)

This would collect Mantra (1993) #1-24 & Giant Size Mantra, Lord Pumpkin / Necromantra (1995) #1-4 (Mantra stories, only), Mantra (1995) #∞ & 1-7, Mantra – Spear of Destiny (1995) #1-2, and issues of the “Spine” crossover.

Ultraverse: Rune (1994 – 1996)

This would collect Rune (1994) #0-9 & Giant Size Rune (1995) #1, Rune (1995) #∞ & 1-7, Rune/Silver Surfer (1995) #1, Rune: Hearts of Darkness (1996) #1-3, Rune vs Venom (1996) #1

Ultraverse: UltraForce (1994 – 1996) [includes Phoenix Resurrection]

Ultraverse: The Ultraverse Heroes Vol. 1 (1993 – 1996) [compilation of Firearm, Freex, Hardcase, Night Man, Strangers, etc]

This would collect Codename: Firearm (1993) #0-18 and Codename: Firearm (1995) #0-5, Freex (1993) #1-18 & Giant-Size Freex, Hardcase (1993) #1-26 & Hardcase Premiere Edition (and maybe the “Spine” crossover issues), The Night Man (1993) #1-23 & The Night Man: The Pilgrim Conundrum Saga (1995) #1, The Strangers: The Pilgrim Conundrum Saga (1995) #1, The Night Man (1995) #∞ & 1-4, The Night Man vs Wolverine (1995) #1, The Night Man/ Gambit (1996) #1-3

Marvel Alternate Realities Omnibus Mapping: Marvel 2099 Omnibuses

With a surprising burst of omnibuses to cover X-Men 2099, Ghost Rider 2099, and Doom 2099, Marvel is now just three volumes away from completely collecting every issue of their original Marvel 2099 universe through its 10yr anniversary revival. Past that, we’d just need one omnibus of the new Marvel 2099 Universe, almost entirely written by Steve Orlando.

Marvel 2099: Punisher 2099 (1993 – 1995)

This would collect The Punisher 2099 (1993) #1-34 and potentially some elements from the “Fall of the Hammer” crossover (Spider-Man 2099 (1992) #16, X-Men 2099 (1993) #5, Doom 2099 (1993) #14, & Punisher 2099 (1993) #13).

Marvel 2099: Ravage 2099 (1993 – 1995)

This one would be a hard sell, since Ravage was the one all-original character in the 2099 line-up! He’s also the creation of Stan Lee, so perhaps the key to marketing this one is called it “Stan Lee’s Punisher 2099.”

This would collect Ravage 2099 (1992) #1-33 and potentially some elements from the “Fall of the Hammer” crossover (Ravage only appears in X-Men 2099 (1993) #5, Doom 2099 (1993) #14, & Punisher 2099 (1993) #13).

Marvel 2099 Companion (1993 – 2009) [Unlimited, Hulk, World of Tomorrow, Knights 2099, & Timestorm]

This is the “everything else” book that could complete the original 2099 line, plus its later reduxes before a reboot during Marvel Now.

This would collect 2099 Unlimited (1993) #1-10 (omitted stories collected elsewhere), Hulk 2099 (1994) #1-10, 2099: World of Tomorrow (1996) #1-8, and 2099: Manifest Destiny (1998) OGN.

Plus, Marvel Knights 2099 (Black Panther 2099 (2004) #1, Daredevil 2099 (2004) #1, Inhumans 2099 (2004) #1, Mutant 2099 (2004) #1, & Punisher 2099 (2004) #1) and Timestorm 2009/2099 (Timestorm 2009/2099 (2009) #1-4, Timestorm 2009/2099: Spider-Man (2009) #1, & Timestorm 2009/2099: X-Men (2009) #1).

Marvel 2099 by Steve Orlando (2022 & on)

Steve Orlando took control of the 2099 Universe after a handful of stalled reinventions. While he initially began with a focus on Miguel O’Hara as Spider-Man 2099, eventually his scope and focus zoomed out to the wider universe with Annihilation 2099 and Conquest 2099.

Note that a brief burst of 2099 reinventions in 2019 during Nick Spencer’s run on Amazing Spider-Man (2018) may not be in continuity to Orlando’s version of the future.

Collects Spider-Man 2099: Exodus (2022) Alpha, #1-5, & Omega, Spider-Man 2099: Dark Genesis (2023) #1-5, Miguel O’Hara: Spider-Man 2099 (2024) #1-5, Annihilation 2099 (2024) #1-5, Conquest 2099 (2024) #1-5, and on.

Marvel Alternate Realities Omnibus Mapping: Marvel’s What If? Omnibuses

Marvel has collected all of their What If material through 1995 in four omnibuses full of their one-off alternate reality tales. We’d need just one more omnibus to wrap up the 1989 series, and then another omnibuses of 2000s one-shots to reach issue #200.

What If?: Into the Multiverse Vol. 3 (1995 – 1998)

This is an easy omnibus to map, because it would simply collect all of the remainder of What If…? (1989)

This would collect What If…? (1989) #76-114 & -1

What If?: Into the Multiverse Vol. 4 (2004 – 2011)

Marvel revived the What If? title starting in 2004, but switched over to releasing a series of 5-6 one-shot issues each year. They released an issue #200 in 2010, reflecting the legacy numbering of the original 47 issues plus the subsequent 114 issues, meaning this should be able to collect 39 issues.

This would collect the following:

What If? (2004) (Aunt May Had Died Instead of Uncle Ben? (2005) #1 (Feb 2005), Dr. Doom Had Become the Thing? (2005) #1 (Feb 2005), General Ross Had Become the Hulk? Wha…Huh? (2005) #1 (Aug 2005)

What If? (2007) AKA 2007-2008 Event One-Shots (What If? Planet Hulk (2007) #1 (Dec 2007), What If? Annihilation (2008) #1 (Jan 2008), What If? Civil War (2008) #1 (Feb 2008), What If? What If? (2009) AKA 2009-2010 One-Shots (Spider-Man: House of M (2009) #1 (Jan 2010), Astonishing X-Men (2009) #1 (Feb 2010), Daredevil vs. Elektra (2009) #1 (Feb 2010), Secret Invasion (2009) #1 (Feb 2010), World War Hulk (2009) #1 (Feb 2010))

What If? (2010) AKA 2010-11 One-Shots (Dark Reign (2011) #1 (Feb 2011), Iron Man: Demon in an Armor (2011) #1 (Feb 2011), Spider-Man (2011) #1 (Feb 2011), Wolverine: Father (2011) #1 (Feb 2011))

And What If? 200 (2011) #1 (Feb 2011), plus Plus the cover of Venom / Deadpool: What If? (2011) #1, a reprint of back-up stories.

Marvel Alternate Realities Omnibus Mapping: New Universe Omnibuses

Marvel’s New Universe was the company’s first attempt to launch a completely new line of books with a shared continuity. These books had a solid pedigree of creators behind them and all lasted multiple years, so fans of a certain age still have nostalgia for them – or, at least, some curiosity.

Add to that the fact that Hickman tapped Star Brand & Nightmask for his Avengers run and I think there is some sustaining interest in these titles! We could knock out the entire line in just five books!

  • New Universe: DP 7 (1986 – 1989)
    • This would collect D.P.7 (1986) #1-32 & Annual 1 and Untold Tales of The New Universe: D.P.7 (2006) #1
  • New Universe: Justice (1986 – 1989)
    • This would collect Justice (1986) #1-32 and Untold Tales of The New Universe: Justice (2006) #1
  • New Universe: Psi-Force (1986 – 1989)
    • This would collect Psi-Force (1986) #1-32 & Annual 1 and Untold Tales of The New Universe: Psi-Force (2006) #1
  • New Universe: Star Brand & Nightmask (1986 – 1989)
    • This would collect Nightmask (1986) #1-12, Star Brand (1986) #1-19 & Annual 1, Spitfire and the Troubleshooters (1986) #5, Marvel Graphic Novel: The Pitt (1987) OGN SC, Untold Tales Of The New Universe: Nightmask (2006) #1, and Untold Tales Of The New Universe: Star Brand (2006) #1

Marvel Alternate Realities Omnibus Mapping: Other Imprints & Realities

Marvel’s multiverse may always be more sprawling than DC’s thanks to their endless one-shot What If stories. However, DC tends to have more evergreen alternate reality stories than Marvel, since they focus more on graphic novels and limited series.

Marvel Action – The IDW All-Ages Series (2018 – 2021)

Apache Skies (2002) #1, Cage (2002) #1-5 [may be in continuity], Dead of Night Featuring Devil-Slayer (2008) #1-4, Dead of Night Featuring Man-Thing (2008) #1-4, Dead of Night Featuring Werewolf by Night (2009) #1-4, Destroyer (2009) 1-5, Doctor Spectrum (2004) #1-5, Dominic Fortune (2009) #1-5, The Eternal (2003) #1-6, Foolkiller (2007) #1-5, Foolkiller: White Angels (2008) #1-5, Haunt of Horror: Edgar Allen Poe (2006) #1-3, Haunt of Horror: Lovecraft (2008) #1-3, Hellstorm: Son of Satan (2006) #1-5, The Hood (2002) #1-6 [may be excluded; it’s in continuity], Howard the Duck (2002) #1-6 [would likely be in a Howard omnibus], Starr the Slayer (2009) #1-4, Strange Tales II (2010) #1, Terror Inc. (2007) #1-5, Thor: Vikings (2003) #1-5, U.S. War Machine (2001) #1-12 & U.S. War Machine 2.0 (2003) #1-3, War Is Hell: The First Flight of the Phantom Eagle (2008) #1-5, Wisdom (2007) #1-6 [may be excluded, as it was in continuity], Zombie (2006) #1-4, & The Zombie: Simon Garth (2008) #1-4

Marvel Noir: The Original Noir Universe (2008 – 2010) [includes Spider-Man, X-Men, Punisher, Iron Man, et al]

This would collect the entire Noir line from Daredevil Noir (2009) #1-4, Luke Cage Noir (2009) #1-4, Iron Man Noir (2010) #1-4, Punisher Noir (2009) #1-4, Spider-Man Noir (2008) #1-4, Spider-Man Noir: Eyes Without a Face (2009) #1-4, Wolverine Noir (2009) #1-4, Weapon X Noir (2010) #1, X-Men Noir (2008) #1-4, X-Men Noir: Mark of Cain (2009) #1-4 (but not Fantastic Four: Grimm Noir (2020) #1, a 616-Marvel comic, or Spider-Man Noir (2020) #1-5, which was not part of the Noir line).

Marvel vs. Wildstorm (1996 – 2001)

This would collect Deathblow/Wolverine (1996), Backlash/Spider-Man (1996), Spider-Man / Gen13 (1996) #1, Gen13 / Generation X (1997) #1, WildC.A.T.s/X-Men: The Golden Age (1997), WildC.A.T.s/X-Men: The Silver Age (1997), WildC.A.T.s/X-Men: The Modern Age (1997), and X-Men/WildC.A.T.s: The Dark Age (1998), Gen13 / Fantastic Four (2001) #1, plus all of the final issues of the Heroes Reborn series – Avengers (1996) #13, Captain America (1996) #13, Fantastic Four (1996) #13, and Iron Man (1996) #13 – all of which included WildStorm heroes!

Sadly, for licensing purposes this probably cannot also grab other Image crossovers with Top Cow and Extreme Studios, which would include X-Force/Youngblood (1996), Badrock/Wolverine (1996), Ballistic/Wolverine (1997), Witchblade/Wolverine (2004), The Darkness/Wolverine (2006), Cyberforce / X-Men (2007), and all of the 1997 Top Cow crossover Devil’s Reign (Devil’s Reign 1/2: Silver Surfer/Witchblade (1997) #1/2, Weapon Zero/Silver Surfer (1997) #1, Cyblade/Ghost Rider (1997) #1, Ghost Rider/Ballistic (1997) #1, Ballistic/Wolverine (1997) #1, Wolverine/Witchblade (1997) #1, Witchblade/Elektra (1997) #1, Elektra/Cyblade (1997) #1, & Silver Surfer/Weapon Zero (1997) #1).

Nth Man the Ultimate Ninja (1989 – 1990)

This would collect Nth Man the Ultimate Ninja (1989) #1-16, a series set in an alternate future of the Marvel Universe.

Power Pack by Gurihiru (2005 – 2010) [includes all 11 miniseries]

This would include all of the side-universe Power Pack YA mini-series drawn by the incredible Gurihiru!

This would collect Power Pack (2005) #1-4; X-Men and Power Pack (2005) #1-4; Avengers and Power Pack Assemble! (2006) #1-4; Spider-Man and Power Pack (2007) #1-4; Hulk and Power Pack (2007) #1-4; Fantastic Four and Power Pack (2007) #1-4; Iron Man and Power Pack (2008) #1-4; Power Pack: Day One (2008) #1-4; Skrulls vs. Power Pack (2008) #1-4; Wolverine and Power Pack (2009) #1-4; Thor and the Warriors Four (2010) #1-4.

Punisher / Fury MAX: Wars Gone By Omnibus by Garth Ennis (2001 – 2024)

This volume effectively creates a Companion volume for the Ennis Punisher MAX collection, and covers the history of military conflicts of Frank Castle and Nick Fury in the MAX universe. A small double dip to support the read order, but logically this would collect 47 issues:
Born (2003) #1-4 (optional double dip), Fury MAX (2001) #1-6, Fury: Peacemaker (2006) #1-6, Fury MAX: My War Gone By (2012) #1-13, Punisher MAX: The Platoon (2017) #1-6, Punisher MAX: Soviet (2019) #1-6, and Get Fury (2024) #1-6.

Punisher MAX Companion (2008 – 2012 (or 2024))

This volume collects all the remaining Punisher MAX material not already collected in the Ennis and Aaron omnibuses. It would sit between Ennis volume 2 and Aaron on the shelf. It would collect Punisher MAX #61-75, Punisher MAX Force of Nature (2008) #1, Punisher MAX Special: Little Black Book (2008) #1, Punisher MAX Naked Kill (2008) #1, Punisher MAX Get Castle (2010) #1, Punisher MAX Butterfly (2010) #1, Punisher MAX Happy Ending (2010) #1, Punisher MAX Hot Rods of Death (2010) #1, Punisher MAX Tiny Ugly World (2010) #1, and Untold Tales of Punisher MAX #1-5.

If Marvel didn’t choose to collect the latest Ennis material with his Fury MAX material, this Companion would also need to collect The Platoon #1-6, Soviet #1-6 and Get Fury #1-6.

Squadron Supreme – Supreme Power: The Complete Saga (2003 – 2011)

This would collect Supreme Power (2003) #1-18, Supreme Power: Hyperion (2005) #1-5, Supreme Power: Nighthawk (2005) #1-6, Ultimate Power (2006) #1-9, & Supreme Power (2011) #1-4.

Wolverine: Old Man Logan – The Wastelanders (2018 – 2022) [includes Old Man Hawkeye & Quill]

This would collect Old Man Hawkeye (2018) #1-12, Old Man Quill (2019) #1-12, and the Wastelanders one-shots (Wastelanders: Black Widow (2022) #1, Wastelanders: Doom (2022) #1, Wastelanders: Hawkeye (2021) #1, Wastelanders: Star-Lord (2021) #1, Wastelanders: Wolverine (2021) #1).

X-Men: The Animated Series – The Further Adventures (1994 & on)

This would collect the remainder of 90s X-Men Animated material from Adventures of the X-Men (1996) #1-12, Adventures of Spider-Man (1996) #3, and material from Spider-Man Magazine (1994) #1-13 and Spider-Man Magazine Special (1995) #1-2.

Then, it would add modern material from 1-8, X-Men ’92 (2014) #1-4, X-Men ’92 Infinite Comic (2015) #1-8, X-Men ’92 (2016) #1-10, the non-canon (to the animated series), X-Men ’92: House of XCII (2022) #1-5, and possibly also the canonical-to-the-cartoons X-Men ’97 (2024) #1-4.

    Some notes

Ruse should include the 2011 series.

You excluded the Lord Pumpkin stories from the Mantra Omnibus. So, where would you place them? My memory of the series has the Necromantra and Lord Pumpkin stories dovetailing, but I could be misremembering.

Nth Man should also include story from Marvel Comics Presents #25 and Excalibur #27.

Apache Skies is a follow-up to Blaze of Glory and ideally would be collected there

With regards to the Ultraverse books, I think Black September only really works when collected together with the ‘spine’ lead up issues.
    *****
    BLACK SEPTEMBER
    – (maybe the Godwheel mini as a prelude?)
    – Rune vs Silver Surfer
    – Curse of Rune 1-2
    – Hardcase 23
    – Mantra 22
    – Night Man 21-22
    – Lord Pumpkin/Necromantra 4 (LP story)
    – Eliminator 1-3
    – Ultraforce 8-9
    – Curse of Rune 3-4
    – Ultraforce 10
    – Ultraforce/Avengers 0-2
    – Black September ∞
    – Rune vol 2 ∞, 1-7
    – Ultraverse Unlimited 1
    ******
This way the book would fit directly after The Infinity Watch and directly before Thanos: Road to Annihilation with regards to Adam Warlock’s story… and “Loki gathers the infinity gems to conquer a universe/secret origin of the infinity gems/whatever happened to Black Knight & Sersi?” is a MUCH easier sell than trying to get people to care about Ultraforce.
