Collecting Daredevil
The debut of Daredevil in 1964 from Stan Lee and Bill Everett took the Marvel method of superheroes to a whole new level. Everett was the creator of one of Marvel’s first heroes – Namor, The Sub-Mariner!
For the past few years, Lee had created an indelible series of flawed, human heroes whose powers doubled as afflictions. The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, The X-Men – these characters were compelled to be heroes by the curse of their abilities, and they were all as interesting out of costume as in.
Daredevil took the “power as a burden” metaphor to a new level, with Matt Murdock’s origin story granting him enhanced senses but leaving him without the power of sight. The burden of Daredevil’s powers was an actual physical handicap that altered his life as a child for years before he ever donned a costume to avenge his father’s death!
Lee was initially concerned that the idea of his new hero might be offensive to blind people, but was overwhelmed by the positive response from charities working with the blind! See The Men Without Fear documentary for more detail.

Daredevil by Frank Miller & Denny O’Neil (1979 – 1986)
Frank Miller’s run on Daredevil was effectively a “reboot” in the terms we use to describe comics today. In his run he methodically deconstructed Daredevil’s origins, replacing his rogues gallery and redefining his supporting players. He turned Daredevil from another Marvel do-gooder to an urban vigilante fighting for both his city and his life in a bloody, adult run.
This is one of the most highly-collected creator runs in Marvel history. However, no run of TPBs collect it as succinctly as this grouping of Omnibuses. Even the ostensibly same “Daredevil by Miller & Janson” line, below, does not exactly duplicate the contents of the two main Daredevil Omnibus volumes – they omit the Man Without Fear mini and #226-233
as oversize omnibus editions…
#158-161 & 163-191: Daredevil by Frank Miller & Klaus Janson Omnibus oversize hardcover (ISBN 0785185682) Includes What If? #28. A prior printing was ISBN 0785126694 and had a glued binding. Reprinted in 2016.

Brian Bendis was still relatively new to Marvel when he took on Daredevil (and the contemporaneous Alias) in 2001, his only notable work to that point being a the Daredevil: Ninja miniseries and the launch of Ultimate Spider-Man a few months prior. By the middle of the run, Bendis was on his way to becoming Marvel’s prohibitive star writer as he also took over Avengers with his infamous Disassembled arc.

Daredevil by Ed Brubaker (2006 – 2009)
Ed Brubaker came to Marvel hot off the success of his Catwoman, Gotham Central, and his own Sleeper for DC and immediately relaunched Captain America into his Winter Soldier period with great acclaim.
Brubaker’s noirish tendencies made him the perfect successor to Brian Bendis’s run on the title, which left Matt Murdock in the seemingly dead-end setting of Riker’s Island prison. His run on Daredevil is terse, briskly-moving, and occasionally serpentine in its approach to Matt Murdock’s battle with both his enemies and his infamy.

Around this time Daredevil appears in Bullseye: Perfect Game #2. I need to check this appearance for significance.
Daredevil (2011) & (2014) – Mark Waid’s Man Without Fear (2011 – 2015)
By 2011 Daredevil had been put through the wringer for a decade with no sign of lighthearted superhero adventures in sight. Comic superstar Mark Waid took over the title with the idea that Daredevil had reached so many unimaginable lows over the past 13 years of comics that the only direction he could go was up.
That didn’t mean Daredevil would have it easy – far from it! – but this series refocused on a smiling, can-do Matt Murdock as he re-found the joy in his double life.

Hello – what an amazing job! I did notice that you are a little behind on Daredevil – I collect DD and Dr Strange – if I can help keep these up to date for you I would be glad to – just let me know.
Thanks for the very kind offer to pitch in, Greg! Updating these older single-hero guides that stretch back to the Silver Age can be a real chore, not only because of the longevity of the characters but because of the complexity of the formatting. I’m trying to tackle one or two a month, probably leaving Cap and Spidey until last because they are terrifyingly complex. Check out the recently-revised Iron Man guide to see the formatting I’m moving toward.
I’d suggest looking at maintaining a proper database, rather than trying to maintain in text/html.
Then you can create all sorts of associations across different artists, authors, eras, books, etc, and have a unified way to output that information to the page.
If you create such a database, you could add description attributes to each era, book, w/e, to get something along the lines of the format you have above.
I love databases and work with them professionally. However, CK has always been meant to be hand-curated guides that insert human logic where something like our long-lost CBDB would be missing important context. (That said, in the background the comic guide content is driven by a ton of databases.)
#1-15 & 1/2: Marvel Knights By Joe Quesada Omnibus has a typo and says Narvel instead of Marvel
Fixed this, thanks!
The appearances in Black Widow: The Itsy-Bitsy Spider appear twice in different places with different volume numbers listed during the 1998-2001 section
I believe I have this right. He appears in both Black Widow 1999 and 2001, which are both collected in that volume. However, I can make it clearer in the guide.
#16-19: Vol. 3: Wake Up takes place almost entirely parallel to some of the events of volume 2 (like the Kingpin trial) so personally I would place them together
Daredevil appears in the first issue of marvel knights double shot and the kingpin appears to not be blind meaning it would be before the Echo -Parts of a Hole story or after issue 46, he also appears in the fourth issue but not the second or third
Daredevil redemption is primarily set seven years before the time of volume 12 decalogue except for the last issue which is almost entirely set in the present of that time so it’s most likely good where it is now
Missing the limited alternate timeline Daredevil: Noir as well as the shi crossover and the two batman crossovers
Daredevil appears in all 3 issues of the 1998 Nighthawk limited series
I don’t have that series (rare, I know!), but it seems like it fits in the post-#380 pre-1998 gap. Do you agree?
The Daredevil in Shadowland by Andy Diggle (2009 – 2011) section has Dark Reign listed after Siege, when it actually occurs before it.
Good catch, thanks!
Daredevil / Captain America: Dead on Arrival one-shot (2008) occurs prior to Civil War, and Secret War as Tony and Steve are both on the Avengers together and Nick Fury is still working for S.H.I.E.L.D.
Thanks, I don’t know how I got this so wrong (maybe mistook it for an earlier OGN), but it turns out I have it in the Marvel Europe trade!
Missing Daredevil: Cage Match from 2010 which is collected in New Avengers: Luke Cage, and set in the early days of both Cage and Daredevil.
Added a link to the Luke Cage guide for this, since it’s collected with his material rather than Daredevil (thus far).
Missing the Magdalena/Daredevil crossover
I don’t typically track out-of-continuity comics in every guide, but thanks for giving me this note in case I add a section ;)
Missing Daredevil: Black & White from 2010
Thanks, I didn’t even know this one existed! It doesn’t look like it has been collected at all.
