The definitive, chronological, and up-to-date guide and trade reading order on collecting Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel comic books via omnibuses and trade paperback graphic novels. A part of Crushing Comics Guide to the Marvel Universe. Last updated June 2022 with titles scheduled for release through December 2002. Looking for Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel (and Captain Marvel)? Head to the Captain Marvel Guide!
It’s fitting that the title of Captain Marvel has passed through the hands of so many Marvel heroes, since it tacitly implies the holder as a mascot for the unified Marvel Universe, just as Captain America stands as a patriotic symbol of America.
Similarly, it makes sense that the title of Ms. Marvel – originally tied to women’s liberation in the 1970s – has been passed down to a new hero.
The many long-time comic readers know Carol Danvers as the original Ms. Marvel, thought she graduated to being Captain Marvel in 2012. That status was cemented by her appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with her Captain title. It’s likely she’ll never be a “Ms.” again.
With the name freed up by Danvers, in 2014 Marvel created a new hero to take up the mantel. Kamala Khan is a teenage girl, a Pakistani-American, a major Carol Danvers fan, and a dormant Inhuman whose shape-changing powers were activated by the aftermath of Marvel’s Infinity event.
Khan’s title is a modern-day delight – a perfect update of the teenage fumbling of early Spider-Man to the modern day for a young women of color trying to live up to the standards of her immigrant parents while forging her own identity.
Kamala Khan was allowed to exist on her own with little intervention in 2014-2015 – she makes few guest appearances outside of her first series. That changed in 2015 with the launch of her second series, after Marvel’s Secret War. Kamala returned with a much higher profile both with fans and within the Marvel Universe. That mean becoming a member of team titles (both Avengers and the Champions), participating in events, and appearing as a more frequent guest star.
Still, you don’t have to pay attention to that! G. Willow Wilson’s tenure ran for more than 50 issues, making a compelling, straight-forward run you can enjoy without the distraction of Kamala’s other appearances. A follow-up series by Saladin Ahmed is more connected to Kamala’s membership the The Champions, but it can still be read on its own.

Where to Start Reading Ms. Marvel
Ms. Marvel is one of the easiest Marvel heroes to get started reading, because she has such an obvious starting point with a clear, linear progression of appearances.
That starting point is Ms. Marvel (2014) #1 written by G. Willow Wilson! It kicks off Kamala Khan’s original 19-issue series, which established her character and which massively influences her Disney+ show. She only made 5 notable appearances outside of her title during that run, and four of them are always collected alongside her material. Plus, you can easily continue to her next series from 2015.
To get started, just continue to the next section, The Complete Kamala Khan by G. Willow Wilson.
If you love Kamala but tend to prefer team books focused on relationships between superheroes rather than their own personal lives, you can also start with Kamala’s membership in The Champions (2016). There, she interacts with other heroes including Miles Morales, Nova, and Amadeus Cho as The Hulk! See Guide to the Champions for more information.
The Complete Kamala Khan by G. Willow Wilson
Ms. Marvel’s co-creator G. Willow Wilson wrote her title across two series – the original 2014 volume and a 2015 second volume that picks up directly from where the prior one left off.
If you want to read the entire run in physical format, you have three different options: 5 deluxe oversized hardcover editions, 5 digest-sized paperbacks, and the original line of 10 trade paperbacks. Generally, Marvel does not reprint their book releases, so the older the volume the harder it could be to find at a reasonable price. For that reason, the new digest-sized paperbacks are probably the easiest version to obtain as of this writing.
If you’ve read this entire run and want to continue to Kamala’s next story, continue down the page to the Marvel Fresh Start section for her next series.

Marvel Now (2013 – 2015)
Marvel Now was a period of Marvel continuity that begin with a line-wide relaunch of every series during 2013 in the wake of the Avengers vs. X-Men event. This period was marked by the heavy influence of the Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchises on the publishing line – particularly when it came to the dominance of of The Avengers, their “trinity” of Cap, Iron, and Thor, and the rise to prominence of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
In 2014, the entire line was punctuated by a major event – Infinity – which was primarily centered on a pair of flagship Avengers titles. This event featured a conflict with Thanos and his Black Order (as later seen onscreen in Infinity War). The end of the event came with a major focus on Marvel’s Inhumans, and Ms. Marvel launched as a part of that focus.
Marvel Now ended in 2015 with Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars, which briefly brought the Marvel 616 Universe (and all of its other Universes!) to an end. That includes Kamala Khan seemingly facing down the end of the world in the final issue of her first series. However, she returned with no major changes to her continuity (along with the rest of the Marvel Universe) in All-New All-Different Marvel in late 2015.

In the wake of Jonathan Hickman’s Secret Wars, Marvel again relaunched their entire publishing line into new series – even for series where the stories continued with no big change to the status quo. That included Ms. Marvel, still written by G. Willow Wilson.
The difference between this second volume of Kamala’s series versus the first is that she was much more integrated into the rest of the Marvel Universe in this period. Though Wilson typical kept this from interfering in Kamala’s own book, she was a member of the Avengers, a player in the Civil War II event, a founder of The Champions, and a part of the mutant/Inhuman team-up book Secret Warriors.
You don’t have to read any of those books to appreciate Kamala’s story! But, if you crave more Kamala, you can expand your read.
Civil War II at the end of 2016 marked the shift from All-New All-Different Marvel to Marvel Legacy. This had no effect on Kamala’s title, but broadly in the Marvel Universe it reflected a focus on the difference between original heroes like Thor the Odinson and Tony Stark and a new generation of heroes like Jane Foster Thor, Ironheart, and more.
Marvel Legacy did not have a single, firm ending point. Instead, titles rolled over to a “Fresh Start” when they reached a natural end of their runs throughout 2018 and 2019. For Kamala, this meant her G. Willow Wilson series concluded and she continued to a new run by writer Saladin Ahmed.
