Fantastic Four (1961) #600

The Fantastic Four are known as “Marvel’s First Family,” not only because they are the most enduring family of the Marvel Universe but because their debut marks the start of the superheroic Silver Age at Marvel!

There are hundreds of different collections of Fantastic Four, especially their original run from 1961 to 1996. However, there are a few specific formats of books that cover large portions of this title, and I’ll cover those first – Essentials, Epics, Masterworks, and Omnibuses.

Fantastic Four Omnibuses and Oversized Hardcovers

These massive tomes have larger pages and collect huge swaths of comics – between 25 and 50 issues a book. They look beautiful on a book-shelf! This is a list of omnibuses focused on Avengers material – other, non-Avengers omnibuses are also listed in this guide chronologically.

Marvel Masterworks

Marvel Masterworks editions are high quality, full color reproductions of original issues. The volumes were originally released as hardcovers, with many now out of print. Some of the earlier editions were also released in paperback. If you decide to buy hardcovers, the newest editions are from 2003 and, with silver dustjackets.

Fantastic Four has their own Masterworks line, as well as Masterworks line for Human Torch and the Thing’s Marvel Two-in-One (1974).

Matt Fraction takes over the Fantastic franchise with totally new directions for each book that do not connect to any themes of Hickman’s run.

Fantastic Four, Vol. 4 follows the team and Franklin and Valeria Richards as they take a family trip through space and time with some dire undertones for the Richards parents. Illustrated by longtime Spider-Man artist Mark Bagley, the book has a glossy, adventuresome theme that gives it the feel of a kid-friendly comic from the 1980s.

FFv2 - Allred PromoThough their adventures in space time are intended to take just a few minutes on Earth, the team designates a substitute foursome to keep an eye on New York and the Future Foundation while they are away. The team of Scott Lang as Ant Man, She-Hulk, Medusa, and Darla Deering as Ms. Thing are as dysfunctional as possible, but they bump up against each other (and the FF kids) in productive, hilarious, and sometimes terrifying ways. With pop-art illustration from Mike Allred (of iZombie and X-Statix) and a wry, tongue-in-cheek script from Matt Fraction, this is a big-time superhero book with an indie feel.

    Fantastic Four: Dark Reign fits better right after the end of Secret Invasion, as it’s a week later and the kids are moving back into the rebuilt Baxter Building, whereas between 565 and 566 the entire family are on holiday in Scotland, having already moved the kids back into the building before that

You could call this James Robinson and Leonard Kirk run that, but you’d be mistaken. Yes, this was full of nods to tons of FF stories both new and old and their unexplored ramifications. More than that, it was an example of how easily non-super forces could dissect a team whose only mandate was to be a family. This story could never be shifted to the Avengers or recycled for the X-Men, and even though it wasn’t a major hit you will appreciate how very Fantastic it is. Kirk is a massive part of that, a secret weapon who makes heroes animated and distinct in a way that Mark Bagley perfected over a decade ago. Visit the guide. […]
