The Definitive Doctor Strange Collecting Guide and Reading Order

The definitive, chronological, and up-to-date guide and trade reading-order on collecting Doctor Strange comic books via omnibuses, hardcovers, and trade paperback graphic novels. A part of Crushing Krisis’s Collecting Avengers Graphic Novels: A Definitive Guide. Last updated November 2018 with titles scheduled for release through July 2019.

Collecting Doctor Strange

dr-strange-alex-rossDoctor Strange has had several ongoing titles over the years collected in a variety of formats. However, there are a few specific formats of books that cover large portions of this title, and I’ll cover those first – Essentials, Epics, Masterworks, and Omnibuses.

Do you need a quick introduction with a few suggested reads? Head to my blog post announcing this guide.

Essential Doctor Strange

Marvel’s Essentials line packs tons of comics into each black and white, phone-book-sized edition with newsprint paper. If you don’t care about color and glossy paper, this is the best way to acquire your favorite classic stories quickly.

Essential Editions are not repeated below in their chronological placement, since B&W is not the original format of this series.

Strange Tales #110, 111, & 114-168: Essential Doctor Strange, Vol. 1 2002 Printing / 2006 Printing

Doctor Strange (1968) #169-178 & 180-183: Essential Doctor Strange, Vol. 2
Also includes Avengers #61, Sub-Mariner #22, Marvel Feature #1, Incredible Hulk #126, and Marvel Premiere #3-10, 12-14.

Doctor Strange (1974) #1-29 & Annual 1: Essential Doctor Strange, Vol. 3
Also includes Tomb of Dracula #44-45

Doctor Strange (1974) #30-56: Essential Doctor Strange, Vol. 4
Also includes Chamber of Chills #4 and Man-Thing #4

The Essentials line has been discontinued and will not extend past #56. Jump to that spot in the chronology.

Doctor Strange Epic Collections

Marvel’s Epic Collections represent a consistent, affordable, full-color bookshelf format of issues in perfect continuity order without a single gap. The catch? Marvel is releasing them in a random order to focus on the biggest gaps first – since early issues are already well-covered by both Essentials and Masterworks.

Epic editions are also listed below in their chronological placement, as they are frequently the only coverage of a specific run.

Vol. 1: Master of the Mystic Arts
Collects Strange Tales (1951) #110-111 & 114-146 and Amazing Spider-man (1963) Annual 2

Volumes 3-12: Not yet announced, but will collected Doctor Strange (1974) #6-81, Strange Tales Vol. 2 #1-19, & Doctor Strange: The Sorcerer Supreme #1-75

Volume 13: Afterlife – Collects Strange Tales (1994) #1; Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #76-90 & Ashcan Edition; and Doctor Strange: What Is It That Disturbs You, Stephen?

Doctor Strange Masterworks

Marvel Masterworks editions are high quality, full color reproductions of original issues. The volumes were originally released as hardcovers, with many now out of print. Some of the earlier editions were also released in paperback. If you decide to buy hardcovers, the newest editions are from 2003 and, with silver dustjackets.

Masterworks are not listed below in their chronological placement, but they are referenced if they are the only means of obtaining an issue.

Doctor Strange Omnibus

These massive tomes have larger pages and collect huge swaths of comics – between 25 and 50 issues a book. They look beautiful on a book-shelf! Other omnibuses not primarily centered on this material are also listed in this guide chronologically.

Omnibus editions are also listed below in their chronological placement, as they are frequently the only coverage of a specific run.

Doctor Strange Omnibus, Vol. 1
A curiously brief book that is explained by the fact that it covers only artist Steve Ditko’s run on the character. Collects Strange Tales (1951) #110-111, 114-146 and Amazing Spider-Man Annual (1964) 2

Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme Omnibus Vol. 1 Oversized Hardcover

Infinity Gauntlet Omnibus
The catch-all omnibus for this massive Marvel event includes a six issue chunk of Doctor Strange issues – Doctor Strange: Sorcerer Supreme #31-36. Also includes Silver Surfer (1987) #34-38, 40, 44-60; Thanos Quest #1-2; Infinity Gauntlet #1-6; Cloak & Dagger (1988) #18; Spider-Man (1990) #17; Incredible Hulk #383-385; Quasar #26-27; and Sleepwalker #7

Infinity War Omnibus (2019 oversize hardcover)
The catch-all omnibus for this massive Marvel event includes six issues of Doctor Strange – Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #42-47. Also collects Infinity War #1-6, plus lead-ins and tie-ins including Fantastic Four (1961) #366-370; Spider-Man (1990) #24; Deathlok (1991) #16; Daredevil (1964) #310; Warlock and The Infinity Watch #7-10; Silver Surfer (1987) #67-69; Wonder Man (1991) #13-15; Alpha Flight (1983) #109 (excerpts) & 110-112; Silver Sable & The Wild Pack #4-5; Guardians Of The Galaxy (1990) #27-29; Quasar #37-40; New Warriors (1990) #27; Marc Spector: Moon Knight #41-44; Nomad (1992) #7; Sleepwalker #18; and material from Captain America (1968) #408; Marvel Comics Presents (1988) #108-112.

Early Doctor Strange

The following issues retell Doctor Strange’s origin or include stories from his early life from prior to his debut.

Doctor Strange: Season 1
Includes Defenders (2012) #1 as an extra. Also collected in paperback as Doctor Strange: Strange Origin with Doctor Strange (2015) #1 as an extra.

Uncanny Origins (1996) #12: Not collected

Strange (2004-2005) #1-6: Strange: Beginnings and Endings
A Marvel Knights retelling of the Doctor’s origins through his becoming Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel Premiere #10

Doctor Strange in Strange Tales (1963 – 1968)

During this period, Doctor Strange split his namesake anthology title with Human Torch through #134 and Nick Fury from #135. In researching collections covering this material, consider that they may be picking up the non-Doctor Strange stories from each issue. For example, Steranko’s Strange Tales run on Nick Fury is collected in many iterations, and none of them include Doctor Strange material.

The Defenders & Marvel Premiere (1970 – 1974)

Doctor Strange begins this period without a solo title as he joins forces with three of Marvel’s other classic, unaffiliated heroes to form The Defenders – Hulk, Silver Surfer, and Namor. Months after The Defenders debut in their own series, Doctor Strange begins a run on one of Marvel’s anthology titles of the period, Marvel Premiere (1972).

This section threads Doctor Strange’s appearances in both titles, plus guest appearances elsewhere. Only his primary solo appearances are bolded.

Just want to add to this since he’s appeared in a few comics since this was published.
    He’s been in…

    All-New Wolverine
    Moon-Girl & Devil Dinosaur
    Gwenpool

And I’m not sure but I don’t think I saw All-New X-Men in the list.

This is amazing! Thank you! I’ve read through all four of the Essential Volumes, The Montessi Formula and Triumph and Torment (the reprint with #57 collected). I’m sad that so much of the Sorcerer Supreme series hasn’t been collected anywhere yet.

Marvel just issued a Sorcerer Supreme omnibus this summer, plus a new Epic of the end of the series! That means about half of it is covered.
