X-Factor – Definitive Collecting Guide & Reading Order

X-Factor comic books in a definitive issue-by-issue collecting guide and reading order for omnibus, hardcover, and trade paperback collections. Find every issue and appearance! Part of Crushing Krisis’s Crushing Comics. Last updated January 2023 with titles scheduled for release through April 2023.

XFa - 0250 variantMarvel launched X-Factor in 1986 as an outlet for the original X-Men team of Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, Angel – and, in a late-breaking decision, the return of Jean Grey.

At the time, the X-Men were at their initial peak of being hated and feared. Public sentiment had turned against mutants. Professor Xavier had just been gravely injured in a hate crime. And, the government had formed its own mutant squad – Freedom Force – to keep the X-Men in line.

As a result, X-Factor launched not as an out-and-proud mutant team, but a team disguised as mutant hunters! In a slight nod to 1984’s hit Ghostbusters, the team suited up in matching jumpsuits and promised to dispose of any mutant problem (though, really they were letting most of their “captives” bunk with them in their own headquarters).

Meanwhile, Louise Simonson slowly built the tension of the comic of Apocalypse while re-establishing (or, really, establishing for the first time) Jean Grey’s character. Rather than a token female and romantic foil, she often became the lead of the book as a multi-dimensional person coming to terms with a cosmic force hijacking her life.

Within a few years the team’s true identities were exposed, but that sent the title into an identity crisis. If it followed the original five X-Men doing mutant things… shouldn’t it just be called X-Men?

Eventually, the line’s editors came to that conclusion, and merged the original five back into the main X-Men flagships with the 1991 launch of adjectiveless X-men.

In their wake, they left the team that would redefine the core X-Factor’s cast for the next 30 years. Peter A. David assembled a gathering of cast-offs including the 6th and 7th X-Men – Havok and Polaris, a little-known Claremontian mutant named Jamie Madrox – The Multiple Man, New Mutants refugee Wolfsbane, an overgrown bouncer generically named Strong Man, and one of the few non-X-Men mutants – Quicksilver.

The book was a surprise hit with fans, less a book about its team being a government-sanctioned squad of heroes and more about them being damaged people who lost the confidence to act heroically of their own accord. David left as the book became increasingly mired in X-line crossovers, but the focus stayed centered on Havok’s team as a rapid succession of replacements gave way to a lengthy run by Howard Mackie.  The run later added Forge, Mystique, and Sabretooth as recurring cast members.

After an unrelated, X-adjacent mini-series in 2002, the franchise went dormant until it was revived in the wake of House of M by Peter A. David, back to center the book on a Private Investigation agency headed up by his longtime favorite Jamie Madrox and another unlikely cast of cast-offs. PAD’s 100+ issue run included PAD’s original 90s cast members Wolfsbane and Strong Guy, plus Rictor, Siryn, Monet, and Shatterstar – and, later, Longshot, Darwin, Pip the Troll, and the returning pair of Havok & Polaris.

The run was notable for its comedic take on detective noir, for character-focused stories, and for winning a GLAAD award for Rictor’s coming out and subsequent relationship with Shatterstar. After a brief break at the top of Marvel Now, PAD relaunched the team as a corporate security force lead by Polaris in an oft-ignored run that lasted an impressive 20 issues while other books struggled to pass a dozen.

X-Factor’s next return was under the pen of Leah Williams, who retained the “investigations” angle and Polaris as a cast member, but reimagined the book as Krakoa’s SVU – investigating mutant disappearances and wrongful deaths. It was a fun book filled with big ideas, but editorial tinkering killed it (and scuttled the final arc), shunting Williams and the team off into X-Men: The Trial of Magneto.

Where to Start Reading X-Factor

X-Factor has several easy entry points when new writers began their runs on the title.X-Factor (1986) #24

X-Factor (1986) #1 allows you to start at the beginning, with Louise Simonson taking the reins from launch author Bob Layton just a few issues later. While the launch of the book was preceded by a two-issue prologue in Avengers and Fantastic Four that explain Jean Grey’s retconned return, they aren’t required reading to enjoy the book. The first 27 issues are an incredible run!

X-Factor (1986) #71 is the true beginning of Peter A. David’s run, though he started scripting with the prior issue. The book doesn’t assume you know anything about its cast, especially since Quicksilver hadn’t been in an X-Men title since the 60s and Madrox and Strong Guy were virtually unknown at the time.

X-Factor (1986) #112 is the first issue after Age of Apocalypse, which is a slight reset of the storytelling status quo. It also begins a 40-plus issue run that is never interrupted for a direct crossover with another X-Men book (though it does briefly tie-in with Onslaught).

Madrox (2004) #1-5 or X-Factor (2005) #1 are both fine starting points of PAD’s 100+ issue revival of the team. While Madrox’s mini-series is a fun character study that establishes him as a private eye, the start of the ongoing series in the wake of House of M is a perfect onboarding point that assumes no prior X-knowledge.

All-New X-Factor (2014) #1 comes with a fresh cast and few strings attached. If the amount of tie-ins in PAD’s first run and the length of his second run intimidate you, try this shorter run first to whet your appetite.

While you can certainly pick up Leah Willams’s 2020 Krakoan team, it relies heavily on understanding the nuances of the Age of Krakoa and does not work as well as a standalone title.

Paperback Epic Collections & Complete Collections

Epic Collections comprehensively collect a character, series, or line of titles in numbered volumes pre-mapped by Marvel. The catch is that the volumes do not come out in chronological order, so the release of a Vol. 1 can be followed by a Vol. 9!. Marvel has gone back to print on many Epic Collections, so there is no reason to think that they will go permanently out-of-print like other Marvel collected editions.

Complete Collections are a paperback reprinting of large swaths of issues, sometimes recollecting two or more original trade paperback releases. They often collect additional issues that weren’t included with earlier collections. Unlike Epic Collections, Complete Collections are not typically reprinted by Marvel – and their lines are not always completed.

X-Factor Reading Order

X-Factor (1986) #1- 70, Annual 1-6, & Prisoner of Love OGN (1986 – 1991)

Begins February 1986, at the same time as Uncanny X-Men #202 and New Mutants #36.

The first five years of X-Factor saw the introduction and initial development of Apocalypse, the transformation of Angel to Archangel, and the genesis of Cable. It also served as a sort of home-base for many line-wide storylines such as Fall of the Mutants and Inferno – both played out central elements of their stories in X-Factor.X-Factor (1986) #1

The team was increasingly incorporated into the Uncanny X-Men continuity until the five members eventually merged back to the core pair of X-books. [Marvel Unlimited: X-Factor, Annuals]

& Spider-Man & X-Factor: Shadowgame (1994) #1-4  (1991 – 1998)

Begins in October 1991, alongside X-Men #1, Uncanny X-Men #281, X-Force #1, Wolverine #47, and Excalibur #55.

At the same time Marvel launched its marquee adjectiveless X-Men title, X-Factor was re-launched with a pack of cast-off characters – sporadic X-Men members Havok and Polaris, New Mutants castoff Wolfsbane, sometimes-Avenger Quicksilver, and random supporting characters Strong Guy and Multiple Man.X-Factor (1986) #71

While wholesale relaunches are typically a sign of book in its death-throes, here it was an unmitigated success. The critically-acclaimed writing of Peter David along with art from Larry Stroman and Joe Quesada helped to re-define this sextet of characters until David’s run on the book ended, at which point it descended to more typical satellite X-book plots.

Still, David’s character developments are felt to this day – as are the themes of his volume. Forge later joined the title, along with Mystique and Wild Child. [Marvel Unlimited: X-Factor, Annuals, Spider-Man & X-Factor: Shadowgames]

X-Factor (2005) #1-50, 200-262, 224.1,
The Quick and the Dead (2008) #1, Layla Miller (2008) #1, Nation X: X-Factor (2010) #1,
& Madrox (2004) #1-5 (Sep 2004 – Sep 2013)

Begins January 2006, concurrent to Uncanny X-Men #466 and Decimation – the mutant-depowering aftermath of House of M, as explored in X-Men #177,  New X-Men: Academy X #20, and New Excalibur #1.

The third volume of X-Factor returns Peter David to the helm and resumes the concept of the latter half of the first volume of X-Factor, where the team is a less-violent, investigative facet of the X-Men universe.X-Factor (2006) #1

The volume begins with Jamie Madrox renting an office along with Rahne (AKA Wolfsbane) and Strong Guy, who are joined by the hilariously bitchy pair of Siryn and M, a recently depowered Rictor, and mysterious House-of-M moppet Layla Miller. Quicksilver loiters on the sidelines, and Longshot and Shatterstar later join the fray.

Despite the unheroic tone and staying mostly clear of X-book storylines, the book’s many arcs plays close to the center of Marvel’s continuity, particularly through the inclusion of House of M’s deux ex machina Layla Miller.

Peter David and the editorial staff execute an impressive amount of control over the book, keeping the look and feel consistent across multiple pencilers – partially due to a carefully cultivated pallette of colors. Clearly David has some sway at Marvel, possibly due to the fact that his old partner Joe Quesada is now editor-in-chief!

As of issue #50 it was re-numbered to #200 to rejoin the numbering of Vol. 1, which ended at #149. [Marvel Unlimited: Madrox, X-Factor, The Quick and the Dead #1, Layla Miller #1, Nation X: X-Factor #1]

Marvel Fresh Start: Multiple Man (2018) #1-5 by Matthew Rosenberg Andy Macdonald (Jun – Oct 2018)

This is not an X-Factor series! However, Jamie Madrox makes his first appearance since IvX in this mini-series in such a way that finally resolves his character arc from Peter David’s run. If anything, this book dovetails with Matthew Rosenberg’s New Mutants: Dead Souls and his run of Uncanny X-Men. [Marvel Unlimited]

Children’s Crusade happens just prior to X-Factor #225, as that is when Rictor is shown to have his powers back and it also directly mentioned to be post Children’s Crusade #6

[…] Peter David may be the only man who will ever pen X-Factor at this point, and it’s for good reason: no one else in the Marvel stable does super-team as regular people as well as him. His concept this time around – X-Factor as a corporate PR team – had a lot of legs and yielded a series of good stories. However, it was slightly hamstrung by a bad draft of characters. David has succeeded twice in the past with a team of tossaways, but the snoozy threesome of Doug Ramsey, Warlock, and Danger without Emma to play off of dragged down the inventive fun he was having with Polaris, Quicksilver, and a quite-delightful Gambit. Despite enjoyable art from Carmine Di Giandomenico, the colors from Lee Loughridge were a rare miss: they trended a queasy-making orange and purple. Visit the guide. […]
