Things To Do In Philly, 8/17 Edition

August 17, 2011 by krisis

Philly features a number of interesting things to do over the next week, and none of them are seeing my band, so let’s jump right in, shall we?

Thursday, August 18
What: Philly Ad Club Summer Social: Karaoke Cooldown
Details: 6-9p, $30 non-members for 2 drinks & snacks, Field House 1150 Filbert Street
Why? Philly Ad Club is a cool collection of local advertisers and marketers, and despite the high price tag this is a fun way to network with them. I hear there will be a cutthroat karaoke contest.

Friday, August 19
What: Philly Geek Awards, presented by Geekadelphia
Details:  SOLD OUT!, 6:30p doors, 8-9:30p show, Academy of Natural Sciences, Philly, 19103
Why? Do I seriously have to explain? Witness every blogger, twitterer, podcaster, and all-around geek that matters in the Philly online scene converse to celebrate some of the most awesome projects released in the past year. Many friends & crushes of CK will be attending, presenting, or vying for awards, including Eric Smith, Britt Miller, Annie Heckenberger, Message with a Bottle, Social Interruption, and the folks from KeyPulp.

Friday, August 19
Who: The Wood Brothers w/Chris Kasper
Details: 10p, $16-18, Maxwell’s Hoboken, NJ
Why? Yeah, Hoboken ain’t Philly, but it’s not often you get to see the truly remarkable modern folk of The Wood Brothers combined with the beautifully sparse folk/rock of Philly songwriter staple Chris Kasper. If you won’t be at the Philly Geek Awards this is a rock-solid, can’t-fail plan for your Friday Night.

Sunday, August 21
What: Big Gay Boat (Seriously, that is what it’s called)
Details:  6-11:30p, $10, Moshulu, Philly, 19106
Why? In the category of “how could you ever pass up this chance,” board a boat with all of the finest dancers in Philly’s LGBT scene and DJ Deejay (who spins the famous Michael Madonna Prince dance party). In their own words, “When was the last time you were at a party and the crowd literally CHEERED when songs came on!” Gay or not, this is going to be an awesome dance party. Partial proceeds supports PhillyGayCalendar.

Neko Case

Monday, 8/22
What: “Standing Yoga” & “Do your carbs right”
Details: 12:30p, FREE, PHS Pops Up Garden @ 20th & Market, Philly
Why? It’s back, and so is my write-up from last week! Hooray for repeated events! Are you a Center City desk jockey? Unslouch from your awful office chair and spend your Monday lunch break in Philadelphia Horticultural Society’s suddenly-green guerrilla urban garden at 20th and Market. Participate in a free yoga fundamentals class that won’t ask you to get down on all fours, and learn a little about getting the right carbs into your diet.

Tuesday, August 23
Who: My Morning Jacket & Neko Case
Details:  6p doors, 7:30p show, $40-55, Mann Music Center, 19131
Why? While I’m not a tremendous My Morning Jacket fan, I can’t help but acknowledge the genre-bending catchiness of their albums and the excited reports of their live shows. Pair that with alterna-folk power-house vocalist Neko Case and the beautiful open air of Mann Music Center and it may just be worth the $40 cover.
