Updated: Ms. Marvel Guide – a Kamala Khan Reading Order!

June 12, 2022 by krisis Leave a Comment

I’m excited to announced the public release of my Ms. Marvel Guide – a complete collecting guide and reading order to Kamala Khan, now the star of her own Disney+ show!

Guide to Ms. Marvel – Kamala Khan

I originally launched my Ms. Marvel Guide to Patrons on 11 December, 2017 as part of several “Marvel Legacy” character spin-offs from existing guides.

At the time, we were only midway through G. Willow Wilson’s second volume of Ms. Marvel, launched in 2015 in the wake of Secret Wars. Since then, Kamala had another ongoing written by Saladin Ahmed, plus a mini-event centered entirely around her with Outlawed.

Now, the guide is now fully updated with all of Kamala Khan’s series, collections, and appearances announced through the present day – plus links to read digitally on Marvel Unlimited! That includes the new series of thick digest-sized paperbacks that collect the entire G. Willow Wilson run in five volumes.

Unlike many older Marvel heroes, Ms. Marvel’s series have existed entirely in what I refer to as “the trade era” – meaning that Marvel collected all of them into trade paperback collections after their release as individual issues.

Does that mean that every in-continuity Kamala Khan story is collected? Not quite. Last month, Kamala garnered her own Marvel Unlimited Infinite Comic. It was written by the author of her last mini-series, Samira Ahmed, so it has a certain ring of authenticity to it that many digital one-shots don’t. However, this new line of Infinite Comics launched in September 2021, and so far none of them have been collected physically. (You also cannot read them on a web browser; they are for app-users only.)

That still leaves you with over 88 issues of Kamala-starring titles to read, plus all of her appearances in All-New All-Different Avengers and Champions.

What are you waiting for? Dig into reading Kamala Khan’s adventures in the Marvel Universe today with my Ms. Marvel Guide.

New for Patrons: Legion of Super-Heroes Guide

June 8, 2022 by krisis 1 Comment

I’m back with a guide for Patrons of Crushing Krisis that has been thwarting my efforts to complete it for over two years! Well, I’m happy to report that today I have finally defeated…

The Definitive Legion of Super-Heroes Guide

I first started drafting this Legion of Super-Heroes guide in 2019 when news broke that Brian Bendis would be reviving the Legion of Super-Heroes (LOSH) franchise for the Rebirth era.

I quickly realized I was in over my head. I might be an X-Men X-Pert, but when it comes to the 30th and 31st Centuries of DC Comics continuity I am a complete neophyte. I quickly pinged several Legion mega-fans, who gave me wonderful advice. In fact, in one instance I actually hired one of them to help me with an outline of the many different eras of LOSH because I was so overwhelmed!

And then… life happened. I changed jobs. We moved houses. ComicBookDB went down. I got a new job. The pandemic began. I got a new computer. I changed jobs again. I built my new solicits database. The pandemic finally reached NZ in full force. Comixology died an ignominious death.

Through each of those changes, I kept pecking away at the Legion guide in my spare moments. Was it really as complicated as I was making it out to be? Actually, it seemed like every time I worked on it, it just got more complicated and even longer!

Finally, over the past two months I began to wrangle it into a discernible shape. And, having spent many hours and thousands of words on The Legion of Super-Heroes, I am now going to summarize the entire franchise for you as simply as someone who has only read about 20 LOSH comics can… [Read more…] about New for Patrons: Legion of Super-Heroes Guide

Doom Patrol Guide – now available to the public!

June 26, 2020 by krisis

Big news: My new Doom Patrol guide is now available to all readers of CK! Thank you to CK’s Patrons for making this guide possible.

Before you watch the new season of their TV show, browse the complete reading order of the rise, fall, & rebirth of DC’s weirdest Silver Age heroes.

I’ll donate all profit from this page thru July 31 to The Marsha P. Johnson Institute.

I’ve recently delayed some planned comics content due to the weighty things happening in both comics and the wider world. I’ve decided to move forward with this first one, but use it to support an organization that protects and defends the human rights of black transgender people.

New for Patrons: Guide to Hal Jordan, Green Lantern

June 4, 2020 by krisis

It’s time for the biggest of the Green Lantern guides for ALL Patrons of CK – and I’m certain there isn’t another one on the internet anything like it!

Hal Jordan, Green Lantern – The Definitive Guide

Working on comic guides is a curious chicken vs. egg situation. Do I start the guide because I’m fascinated with a character’s history, or do I become fascinated with a character’s history because I started the guide?

In this case, I’m firmly in the latter camp.

Part of what was causing me to drag my feet on this guide was that Hal Jordan didn’t seem at all fascinating to me. He was a space cop, went mad with power, and then got redeemed because people love their Silver Age dudes. Plus, that last bit has been obsessively covered by many other websites who actually like this character.

What more was there to know? What could I possibly add?

I found that both of those questions were answered by the same two facts.

First, because Hal Jordan wasn’t altered much (if at all) by Crisis on Infinite Earths, the internet is not obsessed with dealing with his Post-Crisis retcon chronology. Yet, there’s actually an interesting sequence of almost a dozen series published after Crisis that fit prior to his 1990 ongoing return.

I didn’t think it would be too big a deal to list these in story order with some context attached, but I just skimmed five of the top Green Lantern guides on the web and none of them have these details in full.

Second, Hal’s transformation from Lantern to Parallax to The Spectre back to Hal. I only saw a single guide get close to really nailing this story order – and it didn’t give any context!

I’ve never understood this sequence of events before and it’s never been collected succinctly in one place. I assumed that DC wanted to rehabilitate him and just rammed him into their spot as The Spectre so he could atone for his many sins.

That’s not quite how it happened. [Read more…] about New for Patrons: Guide to Hal Jordan, Green Lantern

New for Patrons: Guides to Kyle Rayner, Green Lantern AND Omega Men

May 29, 2020 by krisis

When I told you I had more Lantern guides on the way, I wasn’t joking! Actually, today I have TWO for ALL Patrons of Crushing Krisis…

Kyle Rayner, Green Lantern, Ion, & White Lantern – The Definitive Guide

+

Omega Men – The Definitive Guide

I’m not sure who my Green Lantern is.

I started reading comics at the end of 1991 with X-Men’s peak in popularity, but it took me a while after that to make my way over to DC.

I think that started with the buzz around The Death of Superman. My family and friends assumed I’d know something about it (by the commutative property of comics, I suppose). I dug in a bit, but the entire Superman line was a bit much for a teenager to afford on top of X-Men and Wildstorm! Afterward, I sporadically kept up with Superman and then became a dedicated Wonder Woman buyer.

My reading never reached much beyond that at DC… except for Zero Hour. I was only dimly aware of Crisis on Infinite Earths at the time, but Zero Hour was “the new Crisis,” and I understood that was a big deal. Plus, it had those cool white covers with silver ink!

I also understood that it connected to this horrible hero-turned-villain, Hal Jordan, and his bright-eyed replacement, Kyle Rayner. [Read more…] about New for Patrons: Guides to Kyle Rayner, Green Lantern AND Omega Men
