lalala. So, i should be practicing my new songs more; I brought my electric guitar to the apartment. I am still undecided on whether i’m going to include any older songs like Bridge or Afterglow on my next disc … i think i’ll just record some old ones for posterity, and if they work, they work. The trouble with tracking an album in advance is that you might not record some of the songs to your liking. But it’s a guideline. That guideline is a progression right now, a progression of emotion from “Never Say Goodbye” to “Goodbye,” which is obviously a progression in itself. But, in “Goodbye” i even say “don’t you ever say goodbye” … so i reversed my purpose; in the first song i tell the subject that i won’t say goodbye, but in the last song i ask them if they ever could. That’s been a concept that’s stayed with me for a few months now – other than that and the fact that “Under My Skin,” will be dead center, i’m not sure how it will turn out.

I can’t play guitar for shit. Well, actually, it’s becoming increasingly evident that i think much more like a rhythm guitarist than like a soloist or lead guitarist. For one thing, a solo infers having some sort of rhythm to solo to, of which i have none other than my own. Essentially, i’m all about being able to strip a song down to a solo version, and so i have no use for solo-ing tricks Furthermore, i don’t really know how to construct a good solo; i know how to do it with music theory and with scales, but i can’t write anything worthwhile past a four bar fill. While this revelation at first upset me a bit, i then realized that hardly any of my favourite albums are solo-laden, just riff laden. And, riffs are cool. Yeah… so, don’t expect any big guitar solos on my next disc. Just thought i’d warn you.

I over-narrate. My songs are all stories that i tell again and again. This log is less musings on life than bland daily (and hourly, and momentary) reports on the status of my life. My annalytical term papers are “too narrative – though it makes for a good story.” Hell, even my prose is too – i don’t know – prosey. I am much to fixated on ways to say things and not nearly interested enough in the ways that allow me to expand upon the story being told. It’s the same as my album reviews saying everything about a song except for a single thing about its sound. I’m not sure what i’m supposed to do about it, but there it is, laid out as plainly as i can understand it. Or: is that the problem….

That’s a sorta weak effort but… well, i’m trying to write some more because sometimes something comes out perfect. like, that middle verse … i love that! But, the song doesn’t work with it. Do i change the whole verse just for that one verse to work? not sure … listen to it and then suggest a way out

One artist who i actually wound up sounding very similar to is Melissa Ferrick. I’m more familiar with the first half of her catalogue, but aside from the fact that she writes in Emajor shapes much more than i do, some of my songs could easily be covers of hers. One in particular is “deadweight” which sounds just like her “‘Till You’re Dead.” Compare audio: me vs. her. If you like Ani DiFranco, the Indigo Girls, or Melissa Etheridge, you should definitely be checking the racks for the album i just linked to, Willing to Wait.
