Guardians of the Galaxy – Collecting Guide & Reading Order

Updated Feb 17, 2025! The definitive issue-by-issue comic book collecting guide and reading order for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, in omnibus, hardcover, trade paperback, and digital. Part of Crushing Krisis’s Crushing Comics. Last updated February 2025 with titles scheduled for release through September 2025.

GotG Promo PosterIn 2014 Marvel introduced the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise to the entire planet with their movie version of the team consisting of Starlord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot.

However, the Guardians have only existed in that configuration since 2008! The only similar team was the 1990s cosmic group The Infinity Watch, which included Gamora and Drax. Historically, Guardians of the Galaxy referred to a very different, specific group of characters from Marvel’s far flung future with little overlap to the 2008 version of the team.

What both groups have in common is that they are a set of space-faring heroes who stand against the forces of destruction in the universe. They are, in effect, the Cosmic Avengers.

With that mandate in mind, this guide looks at more than just the titles named “Guardians of the Galaxy.” It also follows all of the core members of the various incarnations of that team, most of whom have never maintained an ongoing title. It also covers prominent cosmic hero Adam Warlock, who lead the Infinity Watch.

If you are interested in the cinematic incarnation of the team, this is your path:

  • Rocket Raccoon & Groot: The Complete Collection has all of the significant appearances of this whimsical pair of characters prior to Annihilation.
  • Avengers vs. Thanos covers the origins of Gamora an Drax. (Optionally, pick up Death of Captain Marvel to complete this story.)
  • Star-Lord: Guardian of the Galaxy collects the earliest adventures of the title character, when he was a pulp sci-fi character with no ties to the Marvel Universe.
  • Jump to Annihilation: Conquest, below and proceed from there. Though Drax played a role in the prior Annihilation event, this is where the team really begins to form. Their first series spins out of this.

If you want to pick up every issue featuring every Guardians character, just keep scrolling down – they’re all covered here.

Guardians and Infinity Watch Incarnations & Members

The future Guardians of the Galaxy debuted in 1969, and after a relatively contained set of appearances (listed below) debuted in their own series in 1990. The original members were Vance Astro, Yondu, Martinex, and Charlie-27.

Over time, this future team featured the members Aleta,  Charlie-27 ,  Cuchulain the Irish Wolfhound,  Firelord,  Hollywood,  Mainframe,  Major Victory,  Martinex,  Nikki,  Phoenix (Giruad),  Replica,  Spirit Of Vengeance (Wileaydus Auctolycus), Starhawk,  Talon,  Vance Astro,  Yellowjacket (Rita DeMara), and Yondu.

The Infinity Watch was spawned from the Infinity Gauntlet crossover. Members included Adam Warlock, Drax The Destroyer, Gamora, Maxam, Moondragon, Pip The Troll, and Thanos.

Maxam appears mainly in the Infinity Watch series, and never since then (so far). Pip the Troll’s appearances mostly overlapped with Warlock’s prior to this time – he would later appear in Thanos, She-Hulk, and X-Factor. Moondragon is primarily an Avengers character, so this guide does not track all of her appearances prior to Annihilators. Thanos has his own guide.

The modern Guardians of the Galaxy were created out of the Annihilation event, and have included the following members: Adam Warlock, Angela, Bug, Drax The Destroyer, Gamora, Groot, Jack Flag, Major Victory, Mantis, Martyr AKA Quasar AKA Phyla-Vell, Moondragon, Rocket Raccoon, and Star-Lord AKA Peter Quill.

Mantis and Moondragon are primarily Avengers characters and are not tracked in this guide until Annihilation. The team has also featured a rotating cast of core Avengers, including Iron Man, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Venom (Flash Thompson), and Thing. Their historical appearances are tracked in their own guides.

As having read the gamora series myself, i can confirm its a stand alone origin-ish story set before any of the guardians stuff

Hi, love all your work, it is a huge help in reading comicbooks in order. Just wanted to point out one thing: Quasar debuts in Incredible Hulk 234, not 94 (in April of ’79).

Oof, that’s a major goof on my part! Thanks for the catch. This page is due for a pretty massive update in the next few weeks, but I’ll jump in and edit that in the next few days.

The fallout from Age of Ultron comes in issue #5 so the events likely comes after #4 and not #3.

Issues #8 and #9 of Guardians (2013) are Infinity tie-ins so the Infinity event comes before issue #10.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Tomorrow’s Avengers #1’ is about the team getting back together and what they’d been doing beforehand and would come before the start of the 2013 series. Also, the Infinite comic is actually from 2013 and is just ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Tomorrow’s Avengers #1’ split into 4 parts.

‘Vol. 3: Guardians Disassembled’ collects #14-17, not 14-16.

Mother Entropy is also collected in ‘Thanos: The Infinity Saga Omnibus’, which also collects the Guardians appearances through various Infinity OGN’s though most of those appearances are from an erased timeline.

The Star-Lord and Rocket Racoon guide pages detail when their series happen in regards to the 2013 Guardians series and Guardians Team-Up, but this guide doesn’t, it just places them all together before Black Vortex.

Issues #1-2 of ‘Guardians Team-Up’ come between #23 and #24 of Guardians of the Galaxy (2013) as Venom has had his redesign but Black Vortex hasn’t yet happened.

The Guardians of the Galaxy appear in Silver Surfer (2014) #4, during the period of time when Captain Marvel and Venom were both briefly members but before Venom was redesigned in Guardians of the Galaxy (2013) #23.

[…] #12. Guardians of the Galaxy by Abnett & Lanning This is a tricky one because, as you can see, it is indeed now an omnibus. Yet, I’m not sure that the 2016 Omnibus wasn’t announced in time to knock it off the 2015 survey. I think the two-volume Complete Collection sated enough thirst to knock this off of folks’ lists (I know it did mine) for 2015, even if we did already know it was coming when we voted in 2014. See Guardians of the Galaxy for more collection details. […]

[…] Visit the Guardians of the Galaxy Guide. Wow, you have to dig pretty deep to omnibus a classic run that was neither on the Secret Ballot nor on my list of 50 additional runs that should head to omnibus. Marvel is really scraping the bottom of the barrel for Guardians content at this point, considering this future team has nothing to do with the movie and the modern guardians at the moment. Maybe they know something we don’t know. […]

[…] In comics, Star-Lord can be a bit of a cypher for writers to project their needs onto – how else to explain his rational turn as a general in the Annihilation sequence followed by a return to space-piracy under Bendis to make way for a movie incarnation. Writer Sam Humphries leans hard into giving that carefree pirate some motivation as well as a focus on someone other than himself with an improbable Kitty Pryde romance. It wasn’t the best book on the stands, but it looked marvelous and put a smile on my face.Visit the guide. […]
