Despite my overwhelmingly pleasant day, i absolutely despise two of my classes and am looking into ways to replace them right now. One is a History class that i can easily replace with another class in any History sequence, and the other is Guitar2, which simply insults my intelligence. Right now the frontrunners for replacements are ‘Germany and the World of Hitler’ and … errr… something else. I’ll just make something up, as long as it counts against my requirements.

It feels incredibly good to know the face of one out of every ten people on the street. Aside from running into Gina and a host of other Drexel Players today, i also exchanged greetings with scads of Freshmen whose minds i have been impressed upon. My most depressed days hinge upon a lack of human interaction, and if today was any indication i won’t be left wanting any of that anytime soon.

Running slightly on time for my first day of classes. Potentially $40 short on my first rent check. Not planning on eating anything in the next 6 hours. Kept dreaming about a blizzard knocking out our power. Talk more later.

Moving further along that thought, i’ll really like to purchase my own domain name and server space soon so that i can keep all my old audio and Trios online… there’s no better way to trace the evolution of my songs and i than to listen to the differences from week to week and month to month. The new song is a perfect example; it first started off as me goofing around with some lyrics that had been floating in my head during the day. Seeing as it talked about joining a punk band, i wanted it to sound “punk” and gave it simple chords. Writing the music wasn’t especially hard, given those limitations, and the song was done in a short amount of time. Of course, when i began to play it i discovered that i simply couldn’t keep up with the racing punk rhythm that i heard in my head. After bouncing around from key to key i wound up half thrashing my guitar and half strumming it, which worked out just fine as far as i was concerned. However, Gina came over today and remarked that it might sound better if i built up a bit more slowly. She showed me what she meant and i joined in with a simple bassline for two run-throughs. Sadly, Gina wasn’t around long enough to cut tonight’s Trio, but the version i played solo was much closer to what she played than what i intended the song to sound like (initially). All of that happened in just one week, so it’s not really hard to see how “Under My Skin” and “Crashing” have evolved over months of constant playing. I’m nearing the 1-year anniversary of “Crashing” … scary stuff. I’m sure i’ll want to talk about that at length when we get there, so i’ll just go back to listening to myself sing now.
Trio: Season 1, #3
I suppose for all my fucking up, Trio is a very true thing. For example, last week i made it through two songs perfectly, and then turned in a fun but flawed version of a third song. My playing is obviously not always up to concert quality, and by posting the first live take that i make it through i show some of the thoughts (musical and actual) behind the songs. Sure, i might have messed up all three songs tonight, but wasn’t listening to it more fun, in a way, than listening to some glistening album cut? Maybe that’s just my love of Ani and Tori showing through, and maybe that’s a bit strange for someone who’s a fan of good music, but i love outtakes. And, rest assured, Trio is heavy on those.
