Ani DiFranco

Ani’s new songs are good, but not really satisfying the way that new songs have been in the past. There’s always a definite difference between songs debuted before a summer tour and after a summer tour (“Wish I May” vs “Swing” or “FreakShow”), since the past few years she’s been recording in that break. This year she didn’t appear to record in that time; was she writing all that time? Unreleased lyrics are here; ani seldom performs material that doesn’t appear on a subsequent album – either everything she writes is golden or she is very considerate of what she puts on display at her shows.

I could be wrong, but since To The Teeth was released last November, this might be the first year ever not to see a full-length Ani release. Of course, she released an EP, several discs by friends and compatriots, and an acclaimed woody guthrie tribute compilation. Still, a year without ani is a lonley year. But, that does mean next year’s musical schedule won’t be totally bare; so far Ani, Garrison Starr, Patti Rothberg, and Weezer. Yes, i said Weezer. No, i can’t hardly wait either.

O,…. new ani song named “rock paper scissors” is somehow carole king / tori / aimee mann . I like it. It’ll be up on UpRush at some point tomorrow, at which point we’ll see just how much traffic i’m really allowed per month.

Imperfectly is featuring a trio of extremely new Ani songs that i am currently downloading. I would love to host some of the new Ani mp3’s at UpRush until the next disc comes out, but the recordings are IMHO the sole property of those who recorded them, so i won’t be so presumptuous as to feature them without asking first. However, i will look into talking to a few of the Ani webmasters to see if i can help out; god knows we have the bandwidth to spare.
