NaBloPoMo Round-Up #2: Me, Bs, and Cs

November 11, 2006 by krisis

Today began with singing “In My Life” for the entire staff of my frou frou hair salon. How they convinced me to do so at 10am on a Saturday morning while ever-so-slightly hung over i cannot fathom.

My hair wound up mostly within the bounds of my hairline instead of being an insane indy-rock mullet, though it’s still long enough to toss around while i sing, which i discovered while rehearsing with Gina for her mother’s Holiday Revue.

I love the irony of our infrequent rehearsals – we spend more time acting as human jukeboxes than rehearsing, and what we do rehearse usually sounds fine after only a few tries. Our ease in making music always leaves me wondering how much rock we could deliver if we rehearsed weekly instead of bi-annually.

In other news, I have finally made it through the NaBoPoMo Bs and Cs – 226 blogs in total. Near the start of the Cs my OCD Godzilla went into overdrive, forcing me to keep track of minute details about each blog.

Thanks to his atomicness, i can report that 20% of the Cs have missed at least one post so far. I’m slightly disappointed that well-meaning surfers from the NaBloPoMo homepage or the Randomizer will encounter so many people who aren’t keeping up with the spirt of the event. I hope those who have fallen off the NaBloPoMo wagon will climb back on for 19 more days of new content.

I got lost in reading quite a few Bs, including Bethiclaus and Beast Momma. Neither are married to a specific theme or topic – they’re just solid daily bloggers. The same goes for Blue Eyed Mexican, a normal woman writing about topics ranging from miscarriage to immigration, all in a well-developed, confident voice. But Wait featured a nicely constructed bit of poetry, which might have been the first i’ve read so far in NaBloPoMo. Some bloggers focused on topics that i plan to address later this month, such as Beautiful Mess‘s succinct post on her on body image / eating disorders, and Boot Camp and Beyond‘s focus on self-betterment.

My favorite B by far was Best of My Life, where every post is about the best something, such as “Best drug PSA from the 80s.” I encourage you to visit and comment on this relatively new blog!

The Cs were slow going for me, but I came away with quite a few new favorites. Crab Cakes just got engaged(!), and otherwise tells witty, self-contained stories about her life. Critical Fluff hilariously rates random things on a scale of superior and inferior fruits, as well as Mulligans. Confessions of a Pioneer Woman takes place on an honest to goodness ranch! I really enjoyed the simplicity of the design on Chirky. Cynical Dad is a father-blogger who readily admits to his own insanity. Cracked Black Pepper has utterly failed the once-a-day requirement by making only one post, but it was great enough that i think it merits linking anyhow.

My favorite C blog may have been Chookooloonks, a well-rounded blogger who posts well-thought words and vibrant photos. Sometimes it’s the simple things that are the most enjoyable. Another favorite was Candy Blog, combining a fun topic (candy!) with a great layout.

I’ll be back with Ds and Es in the not-too-distant future, but if you need more letter reviews head over to Writing Aspirations, where the entire alphabet is getting the once-over.
