Ken Layne‘s blog name would indicate that he’s another ‘netted boy whose life is a crisis in progress, but in reality he’s an actual journalist of some note and repute who still finds stray time to blog information like how the Blue Meanies got $500k from MCA for free, Coca-Cola propaganda that sounds like it’s should be a parody but is real corporate truth, news of super-intellectual racoons in New England, and pictures of rats whose lives are flashing before their eyes. Gotta love it. Consider yourself my new journalism textbook, Ken.

I want their job so bad that it hurts. Journalism is nice. Music is great. But the combined thrust of academics and theatrics wrapped up in top of the line internet technology makes being a PuppetMaster the best job on earth. I suppose this means i should be sending out my resume to good old MS, eh?…

As if Microsoft wasn’t evil enough already, now they’re putting links into pages wherever they darn well please with their new Windows software. Watching the public relations people dig their way out of this hole is mildly amusing if you forget for a minute that the evilest corporation around is trying to weasel it’s way into another place where no one seems to want it just for convenience’s sake; they claim smart-links will be inserted onto pages that are underlinked, and that the feature will be incredibly easy to turn off. Right. Judging by my current technology curve i won’t be using the software until i graduate, but in the meantime i’m hoping this page has enough links as it is. And, anyhow, here’s one more.

Proving that a general public of music fans don’t have to be tone-deaf idiots, Village Voice has released their top 40 albums and singles of the year as voted on by subscribers. Singles really aren’t too entertaining to me, but i was very entertained to see PJ Harvey edge out Radiohead by barely 30 votes for the #2 slot of the year. The PJ album beats Kid A hands down any day, but Radiohead seems to win on every list because of more promotion and a bigger American fan base. Isn’t it sad when the popular unpopular rock bands drown out all the good ones? Anyhow, my faith in music has been reaffirmed by the fact that enough people ignored the knee-jerk reaction of voting for Radiohead to nominate PJ Harvey for praise. Otherwise, i was happy to see Aimee Mann win over Madonna, but frowned when i saw U2’s massive failure All That You Can’t Leave Behind garner more votes than the two ladies got combined. Finally, hip-hop favourites Jurassic5 found a spot on the countdown only one vote higher than Philly’s own Marah, whose album might not be amazing – but it’s definitely Philly. Like i said … this just proved that there are some actual music fans out there. And, with this year booked with releases from Ani, Weezer, Garbage, and Tori Amos so far, it looks like us music lovers are in for quite a ride :p

So, erm, yeah. I want to drop out of school. They aren’t teaching me anything, and when i look at my course outline i don’t see myself learning very much in the future. Maybe this means i’m supposed to change my major, or transfer to a school with a credible journalism program? I’m just so tired… i went through all this college bullshit once and none of the good places accepted me so i wound up getting my nearly straight A’s here rather than anywhere i actually wanted to go. So, now i’m tied down to the people and the campus but not to the university or the program, and with every week that passes my outlook on the future gets more and more bleak. So, now i’m barely going to my classes and hating every second of it and yet i have to do my work so everything else around me suffers, including this and theatre and battle of the bands and all the rest. I want to just be a journalist, and the funny thing is, i probably won’t even be one after i graduate.

life sucks.
