New Comic Book Guide

New For Patrons: Guide to Codename Strykeforce

March 28, 2023 by krisis Leave a Comment

My Indie Comics Month continues, but for this new guide for all Patrons of CK I’m skipping ahead from my sequential march through Image’s launch titles. Even though this comic launched in 1994, it’s the sibling title of yesterday’s brand new Guide to Cyberforce. It didn’t make sense to have one without the other or to cram them into a single guide. That’s why this new Top Cow Production guide got to skip ahead in line to reach you today: its my Guide to Codename Strykeforce.

Guide to Codename Strykeforce

Guide to Codename Strykeforce

Codename: Strykeforce proved the maxim that for every 90s team there had to be an even more extreme version. Even though Cyberforce was full of big guns and cybernetic limbs, we still needed a version of it who were mercenaries for money… right?

New for Patrons: Guide to Cyberforce by Marc Silvestri

March 27, 2023 by krisis Leave a Comment

It’s the final week of my personal Indie Comics Month and I have so many new guides to share with Patrons of CK! Of course, I’ll still be posting guides to indie and licensed comics in the future, but I set a personal goal for guides to launch this month which should reveal itself in full by the end of the week. This new guide is a massive step towards completing that goal, because it means I have now made at least one guide for each of Image Comics six launch imprints! That’s right, it’s my first Top Cow Productions guide for their original flagship title: Guide to Cyberforce!

Guide to Cyberforce

Cyberforce was the original creation of Marc Silvestri for his Top Cow imprint at Image Comics. It holds the unique distinction of being the flagship title of an original Image imprint that is definitely not the most popular  title from that imprint. New for Patrons: Guide to Drax the Destroyer

March 23, 2023 by krisis Leave a Comment

I’m back with the fourth in my impromptu mid-month run of guides to green heroes for all Patrons of CK. Did I have any inkling this grouping of four guides would all debut back-to-back, or that they would overlap with Saint Patrick’s day in the process? I wish I could say it was all intentional, but it certainly was not! This hero is the oldest of all the green heroes I’ve covered in the past week, he’s as deadly as Gamora, and he’s even had more transformations than those famous mutant turtles. It’s my new Guide to Drax the Destroyer!

Guide to Drax the Destroyer

Part of the fun of putting together my definitive guides and reading orders is that I get a new understanding of a character’s progression.

In the case of Drax, I’ve seen all of his appearances before, but I’ve never reviewed them all sequentially to understand the major plot cadences that have caused his character to change over the years – sometimes radically. Of all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Drax is the team member who has had the most distinct eras in his comic history.

What’s so interesting about Drax and his eras is how the Marvel Cinematic Universe has mined each one for a minor detail of his character. While his film incarnation often feels the farthest from the comics out of all of the guardians, really he is equally close to each of his disparate eras from the 1970s through present day.

New for Patrons: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Guide to Mirage Studios Continuity

March 20, 2023 by krisis Leave a Comment

I’m back to kick off a new week of my Indie Comics Month with a massive new guide for Pledgeonaut Patron supporters of CK. I couldn’t possibly focus on modern independent comics for an entire month without focusing on the comic that started as a humble black-and-white zine and turned into a massive licensing juggernaut whose name is known to nearly every child in America from the 1990s to the present day. Welcome to the first of my guides to those green heroes in a half-shell: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Guide to Mirage Studios Continuity!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Guide to Mirage Studios Continuity

I’ve tackled a few massive guides so far in 2023, but none of them have been a full-on research project full of careful citations like my first Turtles guide!

That is because TMNT’s pre-2010 continuity is a tricky thing. The characters spawned many, many, many comics in their first 26 years of life. However, of those many stories, there is a single spine of storytelling that was consistent throughout their entire life.

We can call that spine of stories “Mirage Studios Continuity” because it begins with Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird’s first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1984) #1 and continues through Laird’s final issues for Mirage on his TMNT: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2001) series after he sold the intellectual property rights to his creations to Viacom in 2009 (having bought out Eastman’s share of the rights over the course of the prior decade).

Laird laid out a singular view of what Turtles stories he considered to be in-continuity in his view as the Turtle’s storyteller in chief. That included his own issues of the 1984 series (as well as four solo one-shots and a “Tales” seven-issue limited series) and a brief 1993 relaunch. He later extended his definition to include a 2004 Tales of the TMNT volume filling in stories in his continuity.

(He’d retract his extension in 2014, but that was hindsight talking – the 2004 series was always meant to be fully in continuity, even if Laird decided later he didn’t like all of it.)

For their part, current license-holder IDW has stuck closely to Laird’s definition when collecting the classic material that spawned the TMNT empire. Laird-penned material from the 1984 series (and those supporting 11 issues) has been collected into a pair of deluxe reprints – one in color, the other in black and white. Non-Laird issues from the series have been less collected, in less-prestigious formats, with a handful of gaps.

The Mirage Studios Continuity includes one major wrinkle: Erik Larsen. [Read more…] about New for Patrons: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Guide to Mirage Studios Continuity

New for Patrons: Guide to Gamora

March 16, 2023 by krisis Leave a Comment

Even with plenty of drag and indie comics to focus on this month, I still found the time to squeeze in another new Marvel guide for all Patrons of CK. This guide follows a character who started off both dangerous and incredibly complex when she was introduced by Jim Starlin in 1975, and that’s never changed – although she has changed considerably in her nearly 50 years of comics. It’s time for a Guide to Gamora!

Guide to Gamora

Guide to Gamora

If I was totally off-base about my ideas of about Star-Lord when I got to work on his guide, working on a Guide to Gamora confirmed my assumptions and just made me love the character even more.

In fact, I’d go so far as to say that out of all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamora is both the one who is closest to her comic version in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. That’s despite the fact that she is missing a critical element of her first 30 years of comics in the MCU.
