New Comic Book Guide

Guide to ThunderCats (New for Patrons!)

January 31, 2024 by krisis

New Guide, HO! I’m back with another special mid-week licensed property guide exclusively for Pledgeonaut Patrons of Crushing Krisis. This guide is for a property I love dearly, which rocketed from the obscurity of nostalgia to be the most pre-ordered comic book of the decade, due out a week from today! That’s right, it’s a Guide to ThunderCats – HO!

Guide to ThunderCats comic books

ThunderCats (2024) #1 by David Nakayama, published by Dynamite Comics - covered in the Guide to ThunderCats

I was surprised when I heard that the new ThunderCats comics by Declan Shalvey & Drew Moss from Dynamite Entertainment had the highest pre-orders of any comic so far in the 2020s. Did people still love this property that much? And, hadn’t there already been plenty of ThunderCats comics?

That led me down a rabbit hole that got surprisingly deep, thanks to one particular long-running ThunderCats series most readers have likely never seen or heard of.

Guide to Pre-Crisis Action Comics – Golden Age, Silver Age, & Bronze Age (New for Patrons!)

January 29, 2024 by krisis

To celebrate seven years of my Guide to DC Comics, it’s time to tackle DC’s biggest hero in a new guide exclusively for Pledgeonaut Patrons of Crushing Krisis. When it comes to the superhero that started the Age of Superheroes, you have to start at the start, which is why today I’m debuting: Guide to Superman in Pre-Crisis Action Comics – The Golden, Silver, & Bronze Ages!

Guide to Superman in Action Comics (1938 – 1986)

Guide to Golden Age Action Comics - excerpted from the cover of Action Comics (1938) #1

I have Marvel’s complete publishing history dedicated to memory thanks to reading and re-reading Les Daniels’ Marvel: Five Fabulous Decades of the World’s Greatest Comics over and over again as a tween. My relationship to DC Comics was more approximate. I knew DC better through cartoons and films, and through the major events of the 90s like “Death of Superman” and “Knightfall,” but I didn’t know much about its beginnings and how it kept superhero comics alive in the post-war era until the dawn of the Silver Age.

Guide to ROM, Spaceknight (New for Patrons!)

January 24, 2024 by krisis

Today, Marvel Comics is releasing an omnibus we never thought would come to exist, so I’m releasing a guide I never thought I’d ever make exclusively for Pledgeonaut Patrons of Crushing Krisis. It’s a guide to a toy that became a comic that defined the toy (which was a bit of a flop, as it turns out), but is now back thanks to our collective nostalgia. That’s right, it’s a Guide to ROM, Spaceknight – including his reading order at both Marvel Comics and IDW Publishing!

Guide to ROM, Spaceknight

The cover to ROM (1979) #1, the first issue covered in my Guide to ROM, Spaceknight

Okay, I know what you’re thinking (unless you are exactly in the Gen X age range to have specific existing nostalgia for this comic book). You’re thinking: “Really, Krisis? A whole guide just for a comic book about a toy? Is this really necessary?”

In a word: YES.

In several more words: ROM is perhaps the most-shining example of Marvel’s 1970s and 1980s licensed character comics, which involved a bevy of Marvel’s best creators breathing life into media properties and toy lines in the form of a richly-built world and dynamic supporting casts.

Of course, Marvel’s Star Wars continuity is well-known and well-loved. And, Larry Hama’s G.I. Joe is rightfully lauded for its incredible tight coordination with the continuity of the toy line (for which he wrote all of the packaging copy). However, ROM by Bill Mantlo, Sal Buscema, & Steve Ditko is remarkable for expanding a single failed toy launch into a heroic, dramatic, and occasionally tragic seven-year comic run that crossed over with the likes of the X-Men, the Avengers, Incredible Hulk, Power Man & Iron Fist, and more!

Except… Marvel was never allowed to reprint any of the issues… UNTIL TODAY, the day of the release of the first of three ROMNIBUS volumes collecting Rom’s complete 1979 series as well as the handful of guest appearances that Marvel has always been forbidden to reprint.

Guide to Howard the Duck (New for Patrons!)

January 22, 2024 by krisis

He’s trapped in a world he never made, but I finally made a guide for him! Today, debuting exclusively for Pledgeonaut Patrons of Crushing Krisis is a brand new guide for a Marvel character who just celebrated his 50th anniversary in the world of pink hairless apes. It’s a Guide to Howard the Duck, including a complete reading order of his every appearance!

Guide to Howard the Duck

Guide to Howard the Duck, a reading order and collecting guide featuring the cover of Howard the Duck (2015B) #1 drawn by Paul Pope

As with many children of the 80s, I’ve always primarily known Howard the Duck from his flop 1986 film with Lea Thompson. I don’t explicitly recall watching it, but I know in my heart that we absolutely rented it at some point. After all, it was the only Marvel Comics movie released since the 1940s, and it was produced by George Lucas! I’m sure plenty of kids came home from the video story with this odd duck of a film clutched to their chests based on that credit alone.

Guide to Miracleman & Marvelman – New for Patrons!

January 17, 2024 by krisis

Today is a historic day in modern comics history, so it’s also a big day for Pledgeonaut Patrons of Crushing Krisis! That’s because one of the longest-dangling plot threads in comics has been tied up neatly with one of today’s new releases. The more I thought about it and got curious about it, the more I realized that no one else on the internet would approach explaining it quite like I would. And that is how I wound up spending my week creating a Guide to Miracleman!

Guide to Miracleman

Guide to Miracleman and Marvelman, featuring the cover of Miracleman (2014) #5 by Alan Davis

Today’s historic event is the release of Miracleman by Gaiman & Buckingham: The Silver Age (2022) #7. Aside from being a mouthful, today’s issue is the final installment of the middle “book” of Gaiman & Buckingham’s planned trilogy of Miracleman arcs. Why all the fuss about a middle chapter? Because they started that middle chapter in June 1992, and for nearly two decades it seemed like they would never have the chance to finish it.
