Lessons Learned as a Temporary Bachelor

October 12, 2007 by krisis

As of tonight Elise has been away from Philadelphia for over two weeks.

That not only marks the longest time I’ve gone without seeing her since January of 2002, but also the longest time I’ve ever lived alone.

Effectively, I’ve been a bachelor for the first time in close to six years. which was a pretty big eye opener. What I realized is that even when you function independently as part of a pair, somewhere in your mind you are considering what your other half is doing, and when you’ll see them next. With Elise half the world (and about 24-hours of travel) away, those back-of-mind ticklers were rendered inert.

Here are the ten things I learned while left alone with my brain.

  • 10. I can easily get up on time if I don’t have another person’s alarm clock to confuse me…
  • 9. And, I sometimes really do prefer to sleep on the couch.
  • 8. I enjoy going out for drinks. A lot. And, I don’t tend to drink to excess if I’m coming home alone.
  • 7. Playing guitar alone in the house is only a priority when I have a limited time to do it. (Like, more limited than two weeks)
  • 6. Begrudingly adhered-to habits (like dieting or room tidying) are only fun when I have someone else to gloat to about my success.
  • 5. Conversely, enjoyable or self-affirming habits (like blogging or teeth whitening) are easier to keep up when I’m entirely under my own recognizance.
  • 4. I never, ever, ever turn off the hallway light, even when I am convinced that I recall turning it off.
  • 3. I know absolutely nothing about the function or repair of toilets.
  • 2. My main motivation to do laundry is not lack of clothing – it’s actually peer pressure.
  • 1. I really like Elise.

Fast Asleep or Rocking Out With The Band?

October 11, 2007 by krisis

The first rock concert Gina and I ever attended was The Presidents of the United States of America.

Over the summer the reformed band visited the studio @ Daytrotter, and amidst a trio of newer tunes they also turned in an acoustic version of “Lump.”

Also @ Daytrotter: Catfish Haven returns for an encore session and turns in one of my favorite Bowie songs, which is actually a Rolling Stones cover – “Let’s Spend The Night Together“.

Gina and I are so going to play at Daytrotter within the next two years. Mark my words.

And, on that note, we’re off to play at a bar.

Floaters

October 10, 2007 by krisis

William Hundley’s photos feature strangely disembodied cloaked shapes. They’re more pleasing if you don’t research how he gets the effect, assuming instead that they are the grim reaper, a dementor, an Aztec spirit, the ghost of Uncle Sam, Slimer from Ghostbusters, a force of nature, or, um, other.

On a related note: Nine (emerging) visual artists who will blow your mind.

Sorry, no Trio; have some Kelly instead. (SOTD #7)

October 9, 2007 by krisis

I spent the last four hours setting up for and recording a Trio, but the more I listen to it the more it sounds like a full dress rehearsal rather than an actual show.

Positives:
– Good setup; very clean sound
– Great performance of my new song
– Articulate between-song talks
– Bonus: Made it through a really hard cover for the first time, ever

Negatives:
– Brief audio skips from my FirePod (as many as three per song?)
– Blew my voice attempting a different (easier) cover; lead to lack of dynamics on (harder) cover
– Questionable rhythms on my old song; bad final note
– Bonus: Audio sync on my camera didn’t work

I’m trying to get away from being a crazy perfection freak, because that doesn’t lead to a high quantity of Trios. However, given the clarity of the audio the skipping is driving me crazy, and that’s enough of a reason to compound the other negatives into a redo. Freak or not, I want to be able to listen to Trio months from now without wincing (which was generally the bar I set for myself in Season 5, and it worked out nicely).

Also, I really wanted to do a video podcast of some portion of Trio in video, but my camera doesn’t seem to be up to the job. I can use Elise’s video camera, but that means waiting until she returns to the country, plus a few days (at least) to learn what to do.

So, sadly, I bring you no Trio. We’ll see how long it takes me to trouble-shoot the audio skips and work from there.

In the meantime, have a random recording from over the summer – “Chivas” (aka “Shivers”), by Kelly Clarkson, on baritone guitar. At the moment I have no idea what key I’ve transposed it to, but the chords in standard are A, F#m, C#m, E.

Trent Reznor now free of record label. Given how white-hot-awesome the marketing for NIN’s last record was I can’t wait to see what he does in the absence of a label.
