Updated Comic Guide

Guide to X-Men, The Age of Krakoa – now available to the public!

March 31, 2023 by krisis

Before I debut the final guide of my Indie Comics Month, first I have the next installment in my weekly X-Men Guide update series. This time, it’s not just an update, it’s a whole new guide! I’m thrilled to announce the my Guide to X-Men – The Age of Krakoa is now available to all readers as we anticipate the announcement of more details of “The Fall of X” this weekend from Marvel at MegaCon.

Guide to X-Men - The Age of Krakoa

This guide is different than all of my other X-Men guides, because it’s not just about a single title or a group of flagship books. It’s about an entire publishing line with several distinct eras. [Read more…] about Guide to X-Men, The Age of Krakoa – now available to the public!

Updated: Guide to Doom Patrol

March 27, 2023 by krisis

Today I have an update to my guide to DC’s strangest team of all, my Guide to Doom Patrol – to celebrate this week’s release of the team’s new series with Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1 written by Dennis Culver with line art by Chris Burnham, color art by Brian Reber, and letters by Pat Brosseau.

Guide to Doom Patrol

Guide to Doom Patrol

This guide was originally launched with the support of Patrons of CK back in 2020. There has only been one major development in Doom Patron collected editions sine then, but it was a big one! Last year saw the release of a Doom Patrol by Rachel Pollack Omnibus (2022 oversize hardcover, ISBN 978-1779515346). This collects the beloved run that ended the 1987 Vertigo series for the first time – meaning the entire series is now collected in three omnibus editions!

In addition to adding the Pollack Omnibus, the Guide to Doom Patrol now includes digital links both to buy Doom Patrol single issues and collections and to read if you subscribe to DC Universe Infinite!

This is my first update to a DC guide since starting my lengthy mission to bring all of Crushing Comics completely up to date for 2023! While my regular weekly updates will continue to focus on X-Men for the next few weeks, you can look forward to more DC Guide updates in the next few months – including one key DC team guide being made available to all readers! Make sure you stay tuned to the CK homepage so you never miss a guide update or other comic news.

Updated: Guide to X-Men Legacy

March 17, 2023 by krisis

This week’s X-Men guide update includes some of my favorite runs of all time, because they each had keen single-character focus that mined past continuity to allow characters to grow and change. It’s my Guide to X-Men Legacy.

Guide to X-Men Legacy

Guide to X-Men Legacy

X-Men Legacy was Mike Carey’s reinvention of X-Men (1991) in the wake of “Messiah Complex” in 2008. He made the bold move of jettisoning a fan-favorite team lead by Rogue to refocus the book entirely on Professor Xavier. It was one of the few times in X-Men history Xavier was truly the lead character in an X-Men book – the other being Claremont’s short-lived Excalibur (2004).

After a year of focusing on Xavier, Carey pivoted his focus back to Rogue. Rogue had been a lead character many times over, even anchoring a pair of mini-series and an ongoing title. However, no one had ever before dug so deeply into her character and her powers as Carey. In giving Rogue a respite from the idea of her powers as a curse, he was able to unify the many aspects of her personality we had seen (and loved) over the years – as revolutionary, rebel, leader, lover, and mentor.

Simon Spurrier did something similar on his 2012-2014 run of X-Men Legacy, except he was working with a character with barely any history at all! Professor Xaver’s son Legion had only ever figured heavily into a handful of past comic arcs – his introduction in Claremont’s New Mutants, the final 30 issues of Claremont’s run, LegionQuest as a lead-in to Age of Apocalypse, and Zeb Wells’ recent run on New Mutants. Yet, Spurrier treated him similarly to how Carey dealt with Rogue – digging into why his powers and his life had always been so fractured, and what his humanity looked like beneath that.

I wish this Guide to X-Men Legacy update included new collected editions, especially of Carey’s incredible run on Rogue. Unfortunately, we haven’t seen new collections containing any Legacy issues since the 2018 reprint of Spurrier’s run, aside from a few issues recollected in last year’s Avengers vs. X-Men omnibus. That doesn’t mean there was nothing to update! I added links to buy and read the entire run digitally, clarified the contents of several collections, and slightly tweaked the recommended reading oder.

With Marvel just wrapping up the reprints of the 2001-2012 era of Uncanny X-Men and X-Men (1991) last year it feels like the time is right to recollect X-Men Legacy (2008), which has never been collected beyond its original hardcovers and trade paperbacks. Perhaps we’ll see it recollected in the new “Modern Epic” line – especially if Rogue continues to have a prominent role in the X-Men line in 2023 and beyond.

Updated: Guide to New X-Men by Grant Morrison

March 10, 2023 by krisis

I’m taking a brief breather from my Indie Comics Month today to continue my weekly series of X-Men guide updates! After last week’s update to my Guide to Uncanny X-Men in the 00s, it’s time to take a look at its sibling title and what might be the most-definitive X-Men run after Chris Claremont’s in my Guide to New X-Men & X-Men Vol. 2 the 00s (AKA Guide to New X-Men by Grant Morrison).

Guide to New X-Men & X-Men Vol. 2 the 00s.
AKA Guide to New X-Men by Grant Morrison

There are two pieces of major collected edition news in this Guide to New X-Men update!

First, there is a new fifth printing of Grant Morrison’s New X-Men Omnibus out in just a few months! This is one Marvel’s most-reprinted omnibuses, which after years out of print is now as close to “evergreen” as any single run at Marvel Comics.

Second, Marvel finally finished their “Complete Collection” reprint sequence of this material last year with their X-Men by Peter Milligan: Blood of Apocalypse, which is effectively “X-Men by Peter Milligan Vol. 2.” The first collection included the volume number in the title, so it’s puzzling that this one does not.

The printing of this collection not only concludes Marvel’s reprint of this period, but finally makes one of the hardest-to-find and most-expensive original X-Men trade paperback collections obsolete!

The original Blood of Apocalypse collection was murderous to find 13 years ago when I started collecting, and it hasn’t gotten any easier since then. At the time it was one of the few collections I had to finally break down and pay over cover price to acquire. I just don’t think that many of them were printed relative to the print runs of collections on either side.

That doesn’t mean I only added two collections to this guide! I added much more detail to the New X-Men section, including breaking the pair of paperback printings into separate sub-sections. I clarified the recollection coverage of the Austen and Milligan period, including how issue #165 is orphaned in a Complete Collection of mostly Uncanny X-Men. I explicitly placed of the two annuals in this run in reading order. And, finally, I added digital purchase links and Marvel Unlimited reading links to bring this guide in line with the new Crushing Comics guides.

That means all of my X-Men team book guides are now up-to-date through 2008! However, there are still several more pages to update to cover the intervening 15 years of titles between there and the present day – plus, several solo guides to update as well. Make sure to keep an eye on the CK homepage each week for my newest guide updates.

Updated: Guide to Spawn by Todd McFarlane

March 2, 2023 by krisis

I’m back today to continue my Indie Comic Month run through the original titles from the 1992 launch of Image Comics. As it turns out, I already had a guide for this title, which I launched in 2019. However, a lot of things can change in just a few years, and this title’s 30th anniversary in 2022 opened up a whole new universe of comics and collections. It’s time for a major update to my Guide to Spawn by Todd McFarlane!

Guide to Spawn by Todd McFarlane

When I first created this Guide to Spawn back in October 2019, Spawn seemed like it was in “Legacy Mode” with no signs of change on the horizon. Little did I realize that had begun to change the very month I published the guide!

To me,”Legacy Mode” is when a longstanding comic is only publishing more issues because it has a core of fans that will keep buying them. There’s no extra effort being put into marketing it beyond that existing core of fans. The stories start to feel repetitive and insular. And, there’s no efforts being made to collect or re-collect older issues of the title – since the assumption is that all of the fans already own all of the collections!

That described Spawn as it existed prior to October 2019, but not after. [Read more…] about Updated: Guide to Spawn by Todd McFarlane
