Updated Comic Guide

Updated: Guide to X-Force

September 6, 2022 by krisis

This week I have another update to one of the original Crushing Comics launch guides that I created back in August of 2010. Despite updating it many times over the years, I decided to tear this one down and re-built it from scratch to make it easier than ever to find the physical and digital collections you want – plus, I added over a dozen new collected editions! Welcome to my all-new, all-different Guide to X-Force.

Guide to X-Force

Guide to X-Force

My last update of the Guide to X-Force was before the first collections from Dawn of X were announced, so clearly I had a lot of updating to do! That not only included collections of Benjamin Percy’s 2019 Age of Krakoa series, but also X-Men Milestones reprints of several major crossovers and several new X-Force Epic Collections announced over the past few years.

That’s not the only big addition to this guide. I’ve added all of the features of the newest guides on the site, including a “Where to Start” section, a summary of both oversized hardcovers and paperback Epics & Complete Collections, digital purchase links, and links to read on Marvel Unlimited!

Like I said: rebuilt from scratch. Even though the guide includes a lot more information, it’s also significantly simpler than it ever has been before.

That rebuild included one subtraction, but it was for a good reason! Since X-Statix made a comeback this year into their all-new The X-Cellent series by original creators Peter Milligan and Mike & Laura Allred, I decided it was time for X-Statix to graduate to it’s own guide! X-Statix is one of my favorite X-runs of all time, but they’ve never really had anything to do with X-Force other than squatting in their title for 14 issues.

I’ll be back tomorrow to share that new X-Statix spinoff guide once I’ve polished it up a bit. For now, enjoy this renewed Guide to X-Force – and, let me know in the comments which X-Force incarnation is your favorite version of the team.

Updated: Guide to Astonishing X-Men & Amazing X-Men

August 24, 2022 by krisis

Today I have an update to one of the first guides that I created for the site, 12 years ago in August 2010 – my Guide to Astonishing X-Men & Amazing X-Men!

Guide to Astonishing X-Men & Amazing X-Men

Guide to Astonishing X-Men & Amazing X-Men

No new collections have been released for the three series in this guide – Astonishing X-Men (2004), Amazing X-Men (2014), and Astonishing X-Men (2017). However, that doesn’t mean there was nothing to update and improve! The guide now includes ISBNs for all collections, links for digital purchasing options, links to read on Marvel Unlimited, an improved table of contents, and more-specific information about creators and release dates.

Updating the Guide to Astonishing X-Men always makes me feel old in X-Men years, because hen I first penned this guide it was entirely about Joss Whedon & John Cassaday’s Astonishing X-Men! I launched my original X-Men guides before “Second Coming” was over in 2010, and was just catch up on the team’s move from San Francisco in general to Utopia in specific.

One of the great things about both Astonishing X-Men and Amazing X-Men is that they were always books that appealed to mega-fans but were easy to pick up for casual readers. Every creator change on either title brings a new jumping-on point, whether that’s Whedon’s self-contained run, Marjorie Liu’s character-focus, or Christopher Yost’s throwback to vintage Claremontian themes.

If you’re a multi-media X-Men fan who has always wanted to check out their comics, even single section of the Guide to Astonishing X-Men & Amazing X-Men could be a good place for you to start.

Updated: Guide to She-Hulk

August 16, 2022 by krisis

Are you read to go green? I’ve completely overhauled my Guide to She-Hulk to mark this week’s debut of the new Marvel Cinematic Universe series, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, on Disney +.

She-Hulk stars the mega-talented Tatiana Maslany as Marvel’s Jennifer Walters, a mild-mannered attorney pulled into the heroic life of her Avenger cousin Bruce Banner … or, at least, that’s the story we know from the comics. And if you don’t know the story yet, don’t worry – I’ve got you covered with a guide that includes every She-Hulk series, every appearance, and links to find collected editions, buy digital versions, and read online with Marvel Unlimited.

Guide to She-Hulk, Jennifer Walters

My Guide to She-Hulk will always hold a special place in my heart and memory, because it is one of the first two guides I completed after leaving my tech start-up job in 2016 to be a stay-at-home parent.

At the time, the kid didn’t spend a single second of time looking at screens, so my only downtime from wake-up to goodnight were her mid-day naps. In overhauling this guide, I saw so many places in it where I remembered, “yep, that’s when she woke up,” or other such toddler-motivated interruptions from my guide-making.

As weird and as confusing as a time as that was in my life, it was also a time where I value every single second and every memory. I have so many photos and videos of our adventures, and my She-Hulk Guide is like the negative space of that – one of the few things I was doing in the time I had to myself.

While the guide has always been complete and completely definitive, there were many half-finished thoughts throughout, and I never had the time to refine the the structure and table-of-contents to my typical level of perfectionist completion.

That’s no longer the case. I’ve completely changed my approach to presenting Jennifer Walters’ many series and guest-starring turns, plus added a “Where To Start Reading” section and highlighted the quickest ways to build a She-Hulk shelf in oversize hardcover or paperback.

Some Marvel characters find a niche early on and stick to it. Others grow through a single, continuous arc.

She-Hulk’s progression has been more about evolving with the idea of what being a “powerful woman” means to the broader pop culture in any given publishing era. [Read more…] about Updated: Guide to She-Hulk

Updated: Guide to Collecting Marvel Comic Books homepage

August 8, 2022 by krisis

Today I’m excited to bring you a major facelift to a major page that I hope will represent a quality of life improvement for you and me both – the Crushing Comics – Guide to Collecting Marvel Comic Books.

I first launched this page twelve years ago on 1 August, 2010! Since then, it has expanded from being a simple index of X-Men team titles, to an index of every X-Men book, to an index of dozens of Marvel Guides, to now acting as a directory page linking to over 100 current or coming-soon guides to reading and collecting Marvel Comics. Guide to DC Comics Lucifer – now available to the public!

August 4, 2022 by krisis

I’m happy to announce that my Guide to Lucifer at DC Comics is now available to all CK readers to celebrate for The Morningstar’s appearance in Netflix’s adaptation of The Sandman by Neil Gaiman thanks to the ongoing support of the Mighty Patrons of Crushing Krisis.

Guide to Lucifer

Many viewers have wondered if Tom Ellis’s seductive version of Lucifer would appear in Netflix’s The Sandman, and were surprised to learn that the character would instead be an androgynous golden-haired version played by Gwendoline Christie.

If you read Gaiman’s introduction of the character with Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg in The Sandman (1988) #4 you’ll see yet another depiction – The Morningstar is drawn as an overt homage to a pre-Ziggy Stardust David Bowie!

My guide lists all of Lucifer’s appearances throughout The Sandman as well as how to collect the subsequent 75-issue Lucifer series by Mike Carey, on which the CW show is very loosely based.

Plus, don’t miss on Dan Watters’ excellent 2018 revival of the title and character for DC’s relaunched Sandman Universe!
