The 2016 Most Wanted Marvel Omnibus Secret Ballot – What’s been printed?

April 19, 2017 by krisis

It’s time to vote for your Top 10 most-wanted Marvel Omnibuses for 2018 on the 2017 Secret Ballot, but that begs a question: How many omnibuses from the 2016 Secret Ballot did we get in 2017?

Here’s the short answer:

We saw 10 Omnibuses solicited for 2017 – 20% of the list!

Those books are Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 3 Omnibus, Alpha Flight by John Byrne Omnibus, Avengers by Jonathan Hickman Omnibus Vol. 1, Spider-Man by David Michelinie and Erik Larsen Omnibus, Loki: Journey Into Mystery by Kieron Gillen Omnibus, The Mighty Thor Omnibus Vol. 3, Deadpool & X-Force Omnibus, Daredevil by Mark Waid Omnibus Vol. 1, Daredevil Omnibus Vol. 1, War of Kings Aftermath: Realm of Kings Omnibus, plus kinda sorta Punisher: Back to the War Omnibus

We also saw some or all of the content of 8 Omnibuses solicited in other formats for 2017 – 16% of the list!

That means, of all the books we desired the most in 2016, we saw some format of 36% of them in 2017. That’s not bad!

Want to know the specifics of what saw print, what we’re still waiting on, and how I did with my “Will We See It in 2017?” predictions from last year? Keep reading!

#1. Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 4 AKA by Claremont & Romita, Jr.

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #5
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 0.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Not as an omnibus, but part of this content was printed in Marvel Masterworks: The Uncanny X-Men Vol. 10.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely! We saw part of this content released in the prior year and it still held on to the number one spot.
  • Want to read it right now? The Uncanny X-Men #95-280 Guide

#2. The New Mutants, Vol. 1 AKA by Chris Claremont

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #2
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 4.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Not as an omnibus, but part of this content was printed in New Mutants Epic Collection, Vol. 1: Renewal
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely! The first two New Mutants Classic volumes containing this material were readily available in the early years of the survey, yet this has always been a Top 10 book.
  • Want to read it right now? The New Mutants Guide

#3. Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 3

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #3
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 3.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Yes! Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 3 Omnibus is out next month.

#4. The Incredible Hulk by Peter David, Vol. 1

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #1
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 3.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Not at all!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Hell yes. It might even retake the #1 spot!
  • Want to read it right now? Hulk Guide

#5. Alpha Flight, Vol. 1 AKA by John Byrne

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #4
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017?  1.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Yes! For seemingly no reason other than John Byrne being swell, Marvel released an Alpha Flight by John Byrne Omnibus in January.

#6. New Avengers by Brian Bendis, Vol. 2

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #22
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 2.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Not as an omnibus, but we did see this content re-released in a number of Complete Collections.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely. This vote has never been about the availability of the material, which is out in several formats. It’s all about un-orphaning the Vol. 1 omnibus!
  • Want to read it right now? New Avengers Guide

#7. Excalibur, Vol. 1 AKA by Claremont & Davis

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #6
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 2.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Not as an omnibus, but we did receive an unexpected Excalibur Epic Collection, Vol. 1: The Sword is Drawn
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely. The old Excalibur Classic volumes were still available when the survey began. This vote isn’t about availability – it’s about oversize format.
  • Want to read it right now? Excalibur Guide

#8. Fantastic Four, Vol. 4

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #19
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 2.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely! This rounds like the Lee/Kirby run, so the demand is still high. I think after we get this volume we’ll still see votes for FF, but they won’t be in the Top 10.
  • Want to read it right now? The Fantastic Four Guide

#9. Avengers (1963), Vol. 3

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #23
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 3.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Yes, but it may be slightly lower than before, as many voters will be hedging their bets we’re sure to get this in 2018 thanks to the next Avengers movie.
  • Want to read it right now? Avengers Guide

#10. Avengers by Jonathan Hickman, Vol. 1

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #28
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 3.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Yes! Avengers by Jonathan Hickman Omnibus Vol. 1 is out in July.

#11. Iron Man by Michelinie, Vol. 2 AKA by Michelinie & Layton

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #15
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Yes! If anything, the appearance of a second Michelinie Spider-Man volume will just encourage folks that this is possible.
  • Want to read it right now? Iron Man Guide

#12. Amazing Spider-Man by Michelinie, Vol. 1 AKA by Michelinie, Larsen, & Bagley

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #8
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 2.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: I was wrong, because we are getting this book as Spider-Man by David Michelinie and Erik Larsen Omnibus

#13. X-Factor, Vol. 1

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #25
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 3.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Not as an omnibus, but X-Factor #1-9 saw print in color for the first time in X-Factor Epic Collection, Vol. 1: Genesis and Apocalypse
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Yes, but it’s hard to predict if this one will maintain its high placement now that it’s finally been covered in color. Sure, New Mutants and Excalibur have maintained their places despite reprint availability, both both of those series are more beloved than this one.
  • Want to read it right now? X-Factor Guide

#14. Infinity War

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #20
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 4.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No, damnit.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Absolutely. Talk that Marvel might do an Infinity all-in standard-size box set is just going to incite voters to keep ranking this one even if we’d typically assume it was a sure thing with the Avengers: Infinity War movie on the way.
  • Want to read it right now? Guide to Marvel Universe Events

#15. (tie) Punisher MAX (2004) by Ennis, Vol. 1

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #10
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 4.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Yes. Fans are rabid to see this in oversize format and feeling the sting of this not being one of the omnibuses announced for release in concert with the new Punisher Netflix show.
  • Want to read it right now? Punisher Guide

#15. (tie) Ultimate Spider-Man by Brian Bendis, Vol. 2

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #9
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 5.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: I guess I owe some lucky winner a shiny new Sacajawea $1 coin, because I was absolutely positive Marvel would print this for the new Spider-Man movie! Instead, they went with a few left-field choices of omnibuses.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely!
  • Want to read it right now? Ultimate Marvel Guide

#16. X-Men: Mutant Massacre Aftermath AKA Old Soldiers AKA Before the Fall

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #35
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 3.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No – Marvel keeps trolling us with other awesome X-Men omnibuses like X-Men Classic.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Yes, and now that people know to vote for it (2016 was its first appearance) I’m sure it will rise in rank.
  • Want to read it right now? See Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, and New Mutants.

#17. Ghost Rider (1973), Vol. 1 (of 2 or 3)

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #12
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely. This remains Marvel’s oldest Silver Age superhero without a color reprint. It’s shameful, honestly.
  • Want to read it right now? Ghost Rider Guide

#18. Journey Into Mystery by Kieron Gillen AKA Loki by Kieron Gillen & Matt Fraction

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #17
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 2.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Yes! Despite my lukewarm prediction, Marvel is coming through with Loki: Journey Into Mystery by Kieron Gillen Omnibus to pair with Thor: Ragnarok!

#19. Thunderbolts (1997), Vol. 1 AKA by Kurt Busiek & Mark Bagley

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #24
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 2.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No, although some of the Thunderbolts Classics collections that cover this material were reprinted.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely. This is one of Marvel’s best-regarded late 90s runs.
  • Want to read it right now? Thunderbolts & Dark Avengers Guide

#20. New Warriors, Vol. 2 (or 3)

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #26
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely, and with a Squirrel Girl & The New Warriors TV show on the way it might actually happen!
  • Want to read it right now? New Warriors Guide

#21. The Mighty Thor, Vol. 3

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #14
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 5.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: I was right! It’s not really a big surprise – Marvel was always going to roll out The Mighty Thor Omnibus Vol. 3 for Thor: Ragnarork.

#22. Incredible Hulk, Vol. 2

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #18
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely. Missing out on getting this with Thor: Ragnarok to support Hulk’s appearance was a bummer and fans will keep voting for it (despite the first volume being one of omnibuses that took the longest to sell out).
  • Want to read it right now? Guide to Hulk

#23. Daredevil by Ann Nocenti (Vol. 1 of 2?)

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #7
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 2.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely, although it will be interesting to see if it rises or falls. This dropped 14 spots in 2016, presumably because some of the Nocenti run saw print in Epic Collection.
  • Want to read it right now? Daredevil Guide

#24. Moon Knight, Vol. 1 AKA by Doug Moench

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #11
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely. Moon Knight’s recent runs have been strong enough that he’s gathering new fans like a murderous vigilante snowball rolling downhill, and Marvel didn’t even announce a Moon Knight Epic Collection for 2017. I expect this one will rise in the ranks.
  • Want to read it right now? Moon Knight guide

#25. ROM Spaceknight, Vol. 1 (of 2)

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #36
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 0.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely! The thing is… this might really happen in 2018! IDW now holds the ROM license, and they already work with Marvel on newspaper reproductions and Artist Editions. That means the paths of getting art from Marvel to IDW are already greased, and IDW’s bar for a powerful selling omnibus is lower than Marvel’s.
  • Want to read it right now? Better buy some floppies!

#26. Generation X, Vol. 1 AKA by Lobdell, Bachalo, & Grummett

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #39
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No, not even a flipping Epic collection to go with the eleventy-thousand other new X-Men Epics.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely, although I don’t know if the 2016 surge in interest will maintain. However, this is ever-so-slightly more likely to happen in 2018, with a new Generation X title on the stands and an undefined X-Men TV show headed to air.
  • Want to read it right now? Generation X Guide

#27. Wolverine, Vol. 2

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #30
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 3.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No, and it’s a real pity we didn’t considering we got ostensibly the final Wolverine movie this year, so we’ll have few omnibus tie-in opportunities in the future.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely.
  • Want to read it right now? Wolverine Guide

#28. Doctor Strange by Roger Stern

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #29
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 0.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Not as an omnibus, but we got part of this run in MMW at the end of 2016 (which voters knew at the time of voting) and the theoretical gap in the middle of this potential omnibus in another MMW coming in 2017.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Yes, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one drop a bit given the coverage in MMW.
  • Want to read it right now? Doctor Strange Guide

#29. Adam Warlock by Friedich and Starlin

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #34
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 2.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely. Between Warlock’s counterpart Ayesha appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Warlock being intrinsically connected to Thanos, the movie buzz is going to keep this in the front of voters’ minds.
  • Want to read it right now? Guardians of the Galaxy Guide

#30. X-Factor (2006) by Peter David, Vol. 1

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #16
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? For sure. This is the rare 00s-era run that resonates with new and old fans alike. Even if Marvel decided to kill one of its major characters in the past few months, fans still love this book.
  • Want to read it right now? X-Factor Guide

#31. X-Force, Vol. 2

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #44
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 2.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Yes! Sortof. About half of the material we were expecting has turned up in the Deadpool & X-Force Omnibus paired with Deadpool minis and some of Cable. Given the green light for both a New Mutants film and Cable appearing in Deadpool 2, I think we’ll see X-Force, Vol. 3 appear this year!

#32. Miracleman by The Original Author (AKA Alan Moore, shh, don’t tell)

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #37
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 4.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No. Marvel is sitting on their hands with this one.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely. The hunger is real.
  • Want to read it right now? Grab Miracleman Volume 1, Volume 2, & Volume 3 to catch up

#33. Daredevil (2011) by Mark Waid, Vol. 1 (of 2)

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #41
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 3.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Indeed, we did! Daredevil by Mark Waid Omnibus Vol. 1 carried us through issue #27 this February. With a second Volume a seeming sure-thing to accompany Daredevil‘s third season on Netflix, will voters still bother to list it?

#34. Black Panther (1998) by Christopher Priest, Vol. 1 (of 2)

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #54
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 4.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No, but it’s going to be the first Omnibus solicited for 2018, mark my words.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely.
  • Want to read it right now? Black Panther Guide

#35. Namor, The Sub-Mariner (1990) by John Byrne

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #31
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Yes, and with both Marvel and DC on a Byrne-reprinting tear maybe this one isn’t as unlikely as it was before.
  • Want to read it right now? Namor Guide

#36. Silver Surfer (1987) Vol. 1 AKA by Steve Englehart

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #27
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely. Getting an Epic of half of this material (it’s first reprint, ever!) only dropped it 10 spots between 2015 and 2016. There’s no way it disappears.
  • Want to read it right now? Silver Surfer Guide

#37. Daredevil (1964), Vol. 1

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #21
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 2.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Yes! I guess it was about time that Daredevil’s Silver Age material saw oversized release, because Daredevil Omnibus Vol. 1 was one of the first omnibuses out this year. Will readers immediately hop to voting for a second volume?

#38. (tie) Conan The Barbarian, Vol. 1.

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #56
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 0.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Unknown. This made its debut in 2016 for no particular reason – it’s not like Conan was suddenly any hotter than he was before. Will the lust for Dark Horse to issue this material in oversize format persist – especially now that they’ve covered the entire series with Chronicles editions? Or, will it be forgotten in a rush of superhero book votes?
  • Want to read it right now? Guide to Conan

#38. (tie) X-Factor (1985) by Peter David OR by David, DeMatteis, & Dezago

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #58
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 2.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely! After a debut with a bullet in 2016 this is sure to be back again, especially with it not being touched by an Epic Collection in 2017’s X-Men Epic frenzy.
  • Want to read it right now? X-Factor Guide

#39. Iron Man by Matt Fraction & Salvador Larroca AKA Vol. 3 (sort of)

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #59
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Maybe not. Fans just want this because they are freaky completionists and we have the first two volumes in pseudo-omnibus hardcover. With more voters expected this year, the freak vote might get watered down enough that this falls out of the Top 50.
  • Want to read it right now? Iron Man Guide

#40. Captain Marvel, Vol. 1

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #60
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 3.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely. With 10 obvious choices out of the way there’s surely going to be more room on people’s surveys for this volume of classic material.
  • Want to read it right now? Guide to Captain Marvel

#41. The Defenders, Vol. 1

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #47
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 4.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No! Not even an Epic. It seems like Marvel isn’t going to reprint this for the Netflix show – probably for the best, since it doesn’t have anything to do with it!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely.
  • Want to read it right now? Defenders Guide

#42. Marvel Horror of the 1970s

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #32
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.5 stars.
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Probably – some version of a Horror omnibus gets a vote from 70s aficionados every year.
  • Want to read it right now? You can buy Marvel Horror Essentials Volume 1 and Volume 2, or get the Son of Satan Classic for some of the run in color.

#43. Iron Man, Vol. 3

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #65
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely! With both Amazing Spider-Man and Thor getting third volumes in 2017 I suspect the survey is going to have Silver Age Sequel Fever, and this is the obvious next volume in line for printing.
  • Want to read it right now? Iron Man Guide

#44. (tie) Killraven

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #33
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 0.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Probably, although its widely varying placements the last three years seem to suggest it’s being voted for by a small-but-persistent contingent.
  • Want to read it right now?  Killraven Essentials: War of the Worlds is your only hope.

#44. (tie) Punisher, Vol. 1.

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #66
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 4.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: I’m going to claim credit for guessing this one – Marvel is releasing a Punisher: Back to the War Omnibus that will collect up through his 1986 mini-series, which would have been the first content in this book. We had never really seen an “Early Years” type omnibus before 2017, so no one had a reason to be voting for (or guessing) that before!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? This will be interesting. It’s not like people only wanted this omnibus for the 1986 mini-series, but getting this book is going to satisfying some folks. On the other hand, now if we don’t get Punisher, Vol. 1 this volume will feel orphaned – and voters love to vote in favor of reuniting orphaned omnibuses with their families.

#45. West Coast Avengers, Vol. 4 AKA by Roy Thomas AKA Disassembled

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #67
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 3.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Definitely – it’s the potential final volume in a three-volume line (or four, depending on how you count them).
  • Want to read it right now? Guide to Avengers West Coast

#46. She-Hulk by John Byrne

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #50
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 0.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Maybe. Getting reprints of some of this material last year didn’t cool voters’ ardor for She-Hulk, but that ardor barely made the list! Even a handful of voters skipping this year, or a slight influx of new voters could tip this one out of the results.

#47. Wolverine, Vol. 3

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #70
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 0.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Not in omnibus format, but the Wolverine reprint line did continue through this material with Weapon X Unbound in January.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Hard to say, as it requires voters to burn two spots on their survey – one for Volume 2 and one for Volume 3!

#48. Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Vol. 1

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #72
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 3.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: My exact words were: ” If we don’t get an omnibus, we’ll definitely get a Masterworks.” Well, we’re getting Marvel Masterworks: The Spectacular Spider-Man Vol. 1.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? I don’t think so. This one barely edged on, and that was at least partially on the power of uncertainty of whether it would be touched by the Masterworks line. With that question now answered, I think folks will move on – maybe to Web of Spider-Man – or, at least, lower their votes.

#49. Avengers by Roger Stern, Vol. 1

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #13
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017? 1.5 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? I think this material will rise again after the desire for it slightly cooled last year. Fans love Stern.

#50. Realm of Kings

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #45
  • Chance we’d see this in 2017?4.0 stars
  • Did we see it in 2017: Yes! War of Kings Aftermath: Realm of Kings Omnibus arrived at the end of January.

In addition to the Top 50 books, in 2016 Tigereyes also revealed the six books that did not make the cut (though he didn’t reveal their order of placement.

#51-56. 2001: A Space Odyssey & Machine Man

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): n/a
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Too murky to make a guess. It depends on how many people were satisfied with the 2016 Machine Man TPB, and how many more actually still loved the material inside!
  • Want to read it right now? The 2001 material is stuck in licensing limbo, so it’s floppies for you until you hit Machine Man.

#51-56. Amazing Spider-Man by J. Michael Straczynski, Vol. 1 (of 2)

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #53
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? This appeared in 2014, disappeared in 2015, and had a low placement in 2016. I’m not sure what’s causing the oscillation, but of pre-Superior modern Spider-Man runs this is the one most likely to see omnibus demand.

#51-56. Avengers: Galactic Storm

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): #64
  • Did we see it in 2017: Not as an omnibus, but it’s arriving as a massive Avengers Epic Collection in July.
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? This book already plummeted off the survey after 2015. I don’t see it making a comeback when we’re about to have the Epic volume in our hands.
  • Want to read it right now? Buy the epic!

#51-56. Doctor Strange, Volume 2

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): n/a
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? Absolutely! With the first Doctor Strange volume in hand and Silver Age orphaned lines faring well on the survey, expect this book’s stock to rise.

#51-56. The Micronauts, Vol. 1 (of 2)

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): n/a
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? I don’t think so. As a licensed property, it’s not like a lot of voters are going to be replacing the books that saw print with this one.
  • Want to read it right now? You need to track down single issues.

#51-56. X-Men Legacy by Mike Carey (Volume 1 of 2?)

  • Cumulative Rank (2013-2016): n/a
  • Did we see it in 2017: No!
  • Will it still appear on the 2017 survey? I think so – with the subsequent X-Men: Legacy – Legion by Spurrier run hitting omnibus and some of Legion’s plot tendrils beginning here I think it will be on voters’ minds.
